Career / Progression / MP Level Unlocks

Earn XP to progress through 55 Levels, unlocking Weapons, Equipment, Perks, Killstreaks, and more.

A Note on DMZ

In Modern Warfare 4, DMZ features its own distinct Level Unlock progression track that is separate from the Level 1-55 Multiplayer progression system. As players earn DMZ XP by completing Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops, and other activities, they will progress through 70 levels, unlocking DMZ-specific rewards along the way including new Gear and Stations, Station Upgrades, 3D Printer Recipes, Operator Skins, Consumables, Fire Support (Killstreaks), Survival Kits, and more.

XP earned while playing DMZ also contributes to your overall 1-55 Player Progression, but XP earned in Multiplayer or Call of Duty®: Warzone™ does not contribute to your DMZ Level.

For more information on DMZ progression, check out our in-depth article, How to Play DMZ, Part 2: Tour of Duty —– Forward Operating Base, as well as the complete DMZ Progression Appendix at the end of this blog.

Leveling Up: From Private to Commander

The first step in your Modern Warfare 4 journey begins with a simple goal: climb through the military designations from Private I (Level 1) to Commander (Level 55) by earning XP across Multiplayer, DMZ, and starting in Season 1, Call of Duty: Warzone.

Earn XP by playing matches and eliminating enemies, playing the objective, and completing challenges. Each level unlocks foundational rewards that expand your Loadout options with new gear and tactical options so you can further home in on the content that works best for your style of play.

As you progress through the military ranks, you’ll unlock the following types of content:

Multiplayer Player Level Unlocks

  • Unlocks: Expect one or more unlocks every time you level up, from Level 1-55
  • Loadouts: Default and Custom
  • Weapons: Primary and Secondary Weapons
  • Equipment: Lethals and Tacticals
  • Field Upgrades
  • Perks
  • Killstreaks

Call of Duty: Warzone Integration Note: Modern Warfare 4 Level Unlocks will become accessible in Call of Duty: Warzone when Season 1 releases shortly after launch.

DMZ Player Level Unlocks

  • Unlocks: Expect one or more unlocks every time you level up, from Level 1-70
  • Station Unlocks: Access new Stations within the FOB
  • Station Upgrades: Unlock additional capabilities across various Stations within the FOB. Further Station upgrades can be accessed via the 3D Printer.
  • Recipes: Craft new items at the 3D Printer
  • Operator Skins
  • Items: Unlock the following Items:
    • Consumables
    • Survival Kits
    • Fire Support (Killstreaks)
    • 3D Printer Materials
    • Gear

Level Unlocks Appendix: For a complete list of every piece of content you’ll unlock while leveling up, see the Multiplayer and DMZ Level Unlocks Appendices at the end of this article.

Prestige

Career / Progression / Prestige

Modern Warfare 4 offers 10 levels of Prestige and 1,000 Prestige Master levels. For the first time in a Call of Duty game, players can now choose from two distinct Prestige paths: Classic Prestige and Regular Prestige.

Classic and Regular Prestige

Whether you prefer the traditional reset-and-rebuild structure of Classic Prestige or a more flexible progression path that preserves unlocked content, both systems deliver long-term rewards, progression milestones, and new ways to level up across Multiplayer and beyond.

  • Classic Prestige delivers the traditional Prestige experience, resetting level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress in exchange for a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token, and bonus cosmetic rewards.
  • Regular Prestige allows players to restart progression from Level 1 while keeping all level unlocks and Create-a-Class content intact, offering a more flexible progression path.

Upon completing Level 55, you are given the option to choose your Prestige path. Each time you complete a new Prestige Level, you are given the option again to select either the Classic or Regular Track when entering the next Prestige Level.

A majority of the Prestige rewards are shared by both Prestige paths, though players on the Classic Track will earn bonus rewards.

Permanent Unlocks

Players who select the Classic Prestige Track will earn one Permanent Unlock Token that allows you to permanently unlock a single Level Unlock item of your choice from the available Loadout items.

For example, a player enters Prestige 1, having earned a Permanent Unlock Token for selecting the Classic Track. Because their rank is reset to 1, they will have to reach Level 48 again to re-unlock the Throwing Knife. Or they can choose to spend their Permanent Unlock Token on the Throwing Knife, keeping it accessible to them throughout the remainder of their entire leveling journey, even if (and when) they enter Classic Prestige again in the future.

Note: When choosing which progression item to spend a Permanent Unlock Token on, consider prioritizing Perks, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks, and Equipment over Weapons. Whenever you acquire a Weapon Blueprint from the Store or in a seasonal Battle Pass, the base version of the weapon will become permanently available throughout your entire leveling journey.

Weapon Camos

Create a Class / Edit Custom Class / Camo Select

Unlock Camos that can be equipped to your Loadout Weapons in Gunsmith.

In Modern Warfare 4, Weapon Camo progress begins with the basics: level up your weapon. Whether you’re playing Multiplayer or DMZ (and starting at Season 1, Call of Duty: Warzone), you’ll begin working your way toward unlocking the initial Military Camos. By tying these Camos to your Weapon Level, you are rewarded no matter what your playstyle.

Tip: Get an early start on the Weapon Camo grind with the release of DMZ Early Access on October 20 for digital pre-orders and pre-purchases! Level up your weapons and earn Attachments and Camos that will be available in Multiplayer at the game’s official launch on October 23.

Military Camos

Every weapon begins its Camo journey with the Military Camos. There are eight Military Camos in all, each one unlocked sequentially at escalating Weapon Level milestones. Because the Military Camos are tied to Weapon Level, they must be individually unlocked on each weapon. The required Weapon Level to unlock the different Military Camos varies between each weapon, taking its Max Weapon Level into account.

Each weapon has access to the same eight Military Camos, numbered 1 through 8 (Military Camo 1, Military Camo 2, etc.). As long as you’re using the weapon, you benefit, granting greater flexibility in how you approach the early Camo grind.

Special Camos

Each weapon additionally features three Special Weapon Camos that are unique to every weapon, and once completed, join a universal pool of Camos accessible to all other weapons. Reach the required Weapon Level to gain access to the Special Camo Challenges, tasking you with combat-specific objectives like landing a certain number of double kills, mounted kills, longshots, headshots, and other gameplay challenges.

Modern Warfare 4 features a single Weapon Camo grind that is shared across all modes, and the Special Camo Challenges will automatically adjust to the specific mode you are playing. Because non-player targets count in DMZ, Special Camo Challenges typically require a higher kill count in that extraction mode compared to Multiplayer or Call of Duty: Warzone. Once you complete the challenge in any mode, the Special Camo will be available in all modes. Play the mode of your choosing and get rewarded.

For example:

Han 86 Assault Rifle Special Camo Unlock Criteria:

  • Smoke: Get player kills while the weapon is Mounted. Challenge unlocked at Weapon Level 25.
  • Stormwave: Get player kills while using a silencer. Challenge unlocked at Weapon Level 46.
  • Red: Get player kills without dying. Challenge unlocked at Weapon Level 72.

Sang 9mm Pistol Special Camo Unlock Criteria:

  • Autumn: Get player kills while Aiming Down Sights. Challenge unlocked at Weapon Level 13.
  • Snakeskin: Get player kills without dying. Challenge unlocked at Weapon Level 25.
  • Space Time: Get player kills using Akimbo. Challenge unlocked at Weapon Level 38.

The specific number of eliminations required in each of the above challenges will change based on the mode you are playing. As you unlock Special Camos, your Shared Camo pool will grow, encouraging players to level up a variety of weapons.

Completionist Camos

Once you have unlocked all eight Military Camos and three Special Camos for a weapon, you will gain access to the Completionist Camos. As with Special Camos, Completionist Camos all feature Camo Challenges that the player must tackle before unlocking the Camo.

Gold Completionist Camo

Complete all Military and Special Camo Challenges to unlock. Land 15 eliminations in a single Multiplayer match or 100 eliminations in a DMZ match.

Weapon Prestige and Weapon Prestige Camos

Create a Class / Edit Custom Class

Every weapon class in Modern Warfare 4 includes an optional Weapon Prestige journey that becomes available after reaching a weapon’s Max Level. There are four Prestige Weapon Camos to earn throughout your weapon Prestige journey, though all are facets of the evolving Weapon Camo called “Pyroclast.”

Weapon Leveling

The first part of progression involves leveling up your weapons as normal:

  • Start Leveling: Use the weapon in Multiplayer and DMZ to earn Weapon XP and level up the weapon.
  • Unlock Attachments: Unlock a new Attachment for the weapon every time it gains a level, giving you more options in Gunsmith.
  • Reach Maximum Weapon Level: Once your weapon reaches Max Level, you are given the option to enter into Weapon Prestige.

Weapon Prestige 1

Once you reach Max Level with your weapon, you can choose to enter Weapon Prestige. When entering Weapon Prestige, the following occurs:

  • Level and Attachment Reset: Reset your Weapon Level back to 1 and relock all attachments except for Apex Attachments and Weapon Blueprint Attachments.
  • New Icon: A new Weapon Prestige icon will appear in Gunsmith and on the Killcam.
  • Prestiging a weapon does not relock Shared Attachments on other weapons.
  • Weapon Customization (Blueprints, Camos, Reticles, Accessories, Decals, and Stickers) are maintained and not reset when Prestiging your Weapon.

A showcase of the evolving Pyroclast Camo.

Pyroclast Camo

Unlock Criteria: Reach Weapon Prestige 1 Level 1.

Pyroclast Terminus Camo

Unlock Criteria: Reach Weapon Prestige 1 Max Level.

Weapon Prestige Master

Once you’ve reached Max Level again in Weapon Prestige 1, you will automatically enter into Master Prestige. The Weapon Level does not reset to 1 and you keep all earned attachments. Instead, you will continue to gain Weapon Levels earning up to two Prestige Master Camos. Entering Weapon Prestige Master also unlocks a new Weapon Prestige Master icon in Gunsmith and viewable in the Killcam.

Pyroclast Scatter Camo

Unlock Criteria: Reach Weapon Prestige Master Level 150.

Pyroclast Cascade Camo

Unlock Criteria: Reach Weapon Prestige Master Level 250.

The Modern Warfare 4 Weapon Prestige system offers deep progression with every weapon, rewarding your efforts along the way as you gain total mastery over your favorite armaments. To speed up the process, activate earned Double Weapon XP Tokens throughout the weapon leveling process.

Reticle Challenges

Create a Class > Edit Custom Class > Gunsmith > Appearance > Reticle Select

Modern Warfare 4 features multiple styles of Optic Attachments, including the Mini Reflex, Reflex, Holo, 4x Scope, Marksman Scope, and Rifle Scope, with thermal and non-thermal options for Holo, 4x Scope, Marksman Scope, and Rifle Scope Optics. Each Optic Attachment you equip features multiple unlockable Reticles, including color variations. Here’s how the process works:

  • Step 1: Gain access to Reticle Challenges by first equipping an unlocked Optic Attachment to your Weapon. Optics are unlocked at certain Weapon Level milestones. Check a weapon’s Progression tab in Gunsmith for more intel.
  • Step 2: Once you’ve equipped an Optic, head to the “Appearance > Reticle” section of the Gunsmith menu to view the unlockable Reticles for the equipped Optic.
  • Step 3: Earn the required number of eliminations while aiming down sights to unlock the next Reticle.

Some Reticles include multiple color variants of the same design. All associated color variants will unlock at the same time.

Progress is universal across all modes, whether you’re playing Multiplayer, DMZ, or starting in Season 1, Call of Duty: Warzone. Once you’ve unlocked a Reticle on a specific Optic, it will be available on that Optic in all modes. Reticle unlock progress is specific to each individual Optic Attachment, but because the vast majority of Optics are Shared Attachments, you will be able to continue making Reticle unlock progress on all compatible weapons.

Complete Daily Challenges in Multiplayer to earn XP payouts that will help you move more quickly through the Player Level track. Complete all three Daily Challenges to earn a hefty XP bonus. At the start of Season 1, complete an additional set of Daily Challenges in Call of Duty: Warzone.
