Welcome to the Gulag, a fight for survival where winning your Gunfight will grant you a second chance… while losing your Gunfight results in possible elimination.
During Battle Royale matches, upon your first death in Verdansk, your Operator will be dragged off to the Gulag. Although there is a Gulag Prison in Verdansk you can explore during a Warzone match, this area of the Gulag is not the same as the area you can visit in Verdansk. The area where Gulag prisoners fight is completely sectioned off from the main Warzone experience.
You reach the Gulag only after your Operator is downed and bleeds out. Self-Revive Kits and squadmate Redeploy Tokens can mitigate this circumstance.
Here, you’ll be alongside those who have also fallen during combat, including enemies you may have taken down yourself. Don’t get too comfortable with your prison mates; they may become the one person standing between you and a second chance in the Warzone.
The Gulag: The Basics
After being sent to The Gulag, your Operator will wake up outside a dingy cell overlooking the shower area where players will face-off in a 1v1 Gunfight to get back into the game. These Gulag showers are significantly different than the map named Gulag Showers playable in the 2v2 (and 3v3) Gunfight game mode within the full version of Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare®. The Warzone Gulag 1v1 layout is randomly picked out of three possible layouts.
At the top of your screen, you will see how many matches are left until you step into the showers along with the names of the players currently fighting.
When it is your turn to enter the fray, your screen will fade to black, then come back with you in the showers. You’ll see the loadout you’ve been given for this 1v1 fight on the right side of your screen, and the match will begin after a quick countdown.
The rules for the Gulag are essentially the same as a Gunfight in Multiplayer:
· Health does not regenerate, and your Loadout will be completely random.
· Each round lasts 40 seconds, with the main objective being to eliminate your enemy. If neither player dies at the end of 40 seconds, “Overtime” begins, and a flag spawns.
· Either player has a few seconds to capture this flag. There is a three second capture time.
· During overtime, you achieve victory by capturing this flag, or by eliminating your opponent.
· If no one defeats the other player or captures the flag, the player with the higher health wins. If both sides have the same amount of health and time expires, both players will be redeployed.
While You Wait…
Just because you are waiting for a match does not mean you are stuck in a cell, contemplating your fate.
Each of the Gulag maps have a perimeter balcony that prisoners in waiting can walk around. While walking around this perimeter, you can throw rocks into the pit at both competitors. Rocks do one point of non-lethal damage, meaning that they can take 1 HP (Hit Point) off either competitor, but will not kill them outright if they have only 1 HP left.
This allows you to potentially help another player – including a fellow squadmate – who is fighting in the Gulag to win their 1v1.
Tips for the 1V1
First and foremost, if you like the way this Gulag 1v1 fight is set up, then you’re likely to love Gunfight in the full Modern Warfare experience. The Gunfight Game Mode can be an excellent way to train up for the Gulag, getting you ready for your next Infil with some practice in the main Multiplayer game.
Upon spawning in for a Gunfight in the Gulag, you will have to adapt quickly to your random loadout. Your primary and secondary weapons can range from a sniper rifle and a shotgun to just a sidearm and your fists.
Having familiarity with every weapon in the game is an incredible advantage to have for the Gulag. Because both you and your enemy’s loadouts will be the same, the Operator who has the most knowledge about their loadout’s strengths and weaknesses may ultimately win the match.
Equipment is also not guaranteed; sometimes, you’ll have a C4 and Flash Grenades, and other times, you’ll have nothing but your weapons to work with. When you do have lethal or tactical equipment, a special mention should be made to two equipment pieces; the Throwing Knife and Stim.
Unlike any other equipment piece, the Throwing Knife can be used immediately after spawning in. Keep this in mind, and you may be able to get an unexpected swift kill on an enemy.
As for Stim, it’s the only way you can gain health while fighting in the Gulag. Remember to use it if you have it as a tactical equipment, and it could just save your life.
Speaking of life, you only have one here. Veteran Call of Duty players know this next tip well: “play your life.” In a single-life game mode such as this, rushing forward with reckless abandon may not be the best strategy.
That’s not to say aggressive play will get punished; just keep a watchful eye over your health and don’t make any rash decisions that can cost you the chance to get back into the Warzone match.
If you happen to get into an overtime situation, the flag could be a powerful tool to gain the upper hand against an opponent. Sometimes, it may be better to use it as bait against a needy opponent, rather than an objective you sprint towards and capture. Pay attention to the top of your HUD to see if your opponent is capturing the flag and play the situation accordingly.
Finally, the tiebreaker rule is an interesting one; if neither player takes damage and time expires in overtime, both players are redeployed. This leads to a bit of potential strategy, as if you recognize the other player going against you, there could be a bit of collusion to be had that can save you both… Or not, if the rocks from above determine who survives and who dies.
When you enter the Gulag after death, your 1v1 fight can take place on one of three maps:
This version of the Gulag showers has two cluttered spawn areas with a roomy center featuring a u-shaped stall in the dead center.
The spawn areas have two shower stalls sitting at a diagonal, making the area cramped and conducive to close-range firefights. If you push up too far into the other spawn, or your enemy comes to you, be prepared for a deadly game of ring-around-the-rosy as your opponent could be circling these stalls trying to find you.
Whereas the other two Gulag variants have great sightlines down the north and south lanes, this one has obstructed views that complicate long-range firefights. Using a marksman or sniper rifle can still be done at an angle by stepping in closer towards the middle area, which is the roomiest out of the three variants. The amount of open space here can leave you open to enemy fire from multiple angles, so be on guard when stepping out onto this tiled open space.
The middle u-shaped stall is where the overtime flag spawns in and is a hotbed for intense combat even outside of overtime. A small ledge that breaks up the stalls can act as a window into the overtime area, allowing you to peek over it and see what is happening inside the stall or in the opposite lane.
A circular pattern of showers is the main feature of this map variant, as it breaks up action in the center from east to west.
If you have a CQB weapon in your given loadout, hugging the central lane may be your best bet, as there isn’t a clear sightline that can leave you exposed on the perimeter or inside the circular stall. Should your opponent also meet you inside the middle circular stall – such as for the overtime flag, which spawns inside of here – get ready for a very intense fight.
Both spawn areas are the roomiest of the three variants, allowing for serious combat to take place if one player pushes up all the way into the enemy spawn. If you are caught here, the lone middle stall on either side will be your main source of cover, so the ensuing gunfight may come down to whoever has the best evasive maneuvers and accuracy.
As for long-range weapons, their use case is the north and south lanes, which are only partially obstructed by a broken double stall. There is still a solid view from one spawn into the other down this lane, which is great for using that long-range rifle or LMG in your given loadout to quickly end your trip to the Gulag.
Two broken stalls form an H-shape in the middle define this Gulag shower variant.
The entire middle third is basically oval-shaped, with four curved stalls in each of the four corners. This is where close-quarters weapons can do well, as the layout cuts down longer sightlines running east-west and overall limits spacing. Although they block foot traffic, the fences on the top of these curved stalls do not reach the ceiling, allowing you to lob grenades or other equipment up and over them.
The north and south lanes are fairly straight, save for a stall in the middle that partially cuts the sightline between spawns. Still, much like the second variant, one could use a weapon with a high-magnification scope and pick off an enemy on the other side of the showers. Between the three lanes is another place where longer-range weapons to shine, as there is a good diagonal sightline through the middle of the map.
Both spawn areas aren’t too complex; the stalls here allow for close-quarters combat. However, this is usually where you’ll pick a lane, press forward, and go for the kill.
The overtime flag sits at the dead center of the map between the stalls. If you reach overtime, it may be a good idea to wait behind the stall opposite of your opponent, then either lob an equipment piece over or pop out to catch them on the objective.
