After two months of competition in the Call of Duty World League, Presented by PlayStation 4, the best teams from North America will meet this weekend in the Stage 1 Finals. The top eight teams will compete in a Playoff bracket for the main prize pool and the title of Stage 1 Champions. As for the bottom four teams, they'll have to re-qualify for Stage 2 in Relegation against the top four Challenge Division teams. It's set to be a weekend to remember in Call of Duty esports!
Check out some of the major storylines heading into the weekend:
OpTic Gaming and Rise Nation finished at the top of the Stage 1 standings, and they'll be the teams to watch for to take home the top prize. For OpTic, the results speak for themselves: A 20-2 Stage 1 record with a 13-series winning streak to end the season. As for Rise Nation, they may not have the big names on their roster, but they have been a consistent top performer in both online and LAN competitions.
The Dark Horses:
As evidenced by the tight Playoff race at the end of Stage 1, the level of competition in North America has never been higher. Keep an eye on Luminosity, who made it all the way to the Grand Finals of UMG South Carolina. Team eLevate could be a threat as well, a team that has been steadily improving throughout the second half of Stage 1. It only takes a player getting hot in a series to completely swing the Playoff bracket.
Because of their finish at the bottom of the Stage 1 standings, four Pro Division teams will need to re-qualify for Stage 2 with a Relegation match against a top Challenge Division team. These Challenge Division teams feature some of the best players not currently in the Pro Division, and they will be hungry for their opportunity to ascend to the elite ranks. Can the Pro Division teams hold onto their spots? Which Challenge Division teams will qualify for Stage 2? The fight for Relegation may just match the intensity of the Playoffs.
