Sources point to 2013 launch for 'Xbox Next'
Several projects already underway for new Microsoft system
Microsoft and industry partners are working towards a 2013 launch of the next generation Xbox, Develop understands.
Multiple sources across the industry, from processor chip manufacturers to middleware firms, have told Develop they expect the console to be fully unveiled at E3 2013, months before its release. The collection of data points to a 2013 launch for the system across all main regions, though early 2014 remains a possibility.
Few in the games business expect Xbox Next to be in stores before the holiday side of 2013 – this Christmas and the next will likely see Microsoft marketing software for Xbox 360, Windows Phone and its Kinect motion controller.
Microsoft has declined to comment.
In further developments:
* Develop understands that Lionhead is working on a project internally named ‘Fable Next’, which will launch on the new console.
* Epic Games’ new Unreal Engine would likely be available sooner than the 2014 date recently given by studio founder Tim Sweeney.
* One source still insists that an EA studio already has rudimentary Xbox console technology on desks. EA has flatly denied the claim.
Further data on the so-called ‘Xbox Next’ project comes amid new information showing that preliminary work on PlayStation 4 games is underway.
The Xbox 360 has sold more than 55 million units worldwide since its release in October 2005.

PS4 and the next xbox, you have some insider infor
I wish I did so I could make some money off that info ![]()
I think MS and Sony are waiting, they wont throw in a new console till atleast 2015, not when they are still selling, the Wii U isn't a next gen console
i read a something a while back say it was going to around 2015 before the next gen consoles would be out
Sony and MS wont be rushed, Nintendo's Wii U is just an upgraded Wii with HD Graphic's it wont affect them
MS has had job postings for the last quarter indicating they are deep in development on the NeXtBOX...
... 2013 sounds about right with the COD 2013 being the tentpole title.
That's why the contract to have DLC on XBOX 360 first expires at the end of 2012.
This is simply my opinion...
If it was 2013 they would announced something by now, at least given hints, MS are too busying making deals to extend the 360's life. They are well know for ditching a product after they launch a new one, just look at the original Xbox, 360 came out, production ceased
That is ridiculous. You really think they'd tip their hat to Sony and everyone else now for a 2013 launch?
There are hints coming out. Xbox employees have posted info on Linked In, etc about working on the next gen Xbox.
Certainly more and more info will begin to leak out, but I would expect an "official" announcement at E3 (May/June) with a Holiday release. For which year though is the question. A 2012 E3 Announcement could happen with a holiday 2012 launch. Although, that could very well be 2013.
Its not about tipping their hat, a prototype would of been out about now atleast
For a 2013 launch they would of atleast announced it now, the 360 too 2 and half years to develop
Two year development cycle for games...
12 months to switch production base from 360 to neXtBOX...
6-8 month ramp up on production to build enough units...
Yep... November 2013.
Microsoft didn't officialy unveil the Xbox 360 until six months before launch.
yeah, but they announced the prototype
I don't seem to recall them "announcing" a prototype nor would I think they would... ![]()
I'd never be able to afford it being 18 at university at the time. I'll be broke for cash

Well the reason for it is because console life spans are expected to last 7 years but support for the console itself will last 10 years. 7 years is actually a long time for a console to stay on it's own until it hits it's limits and is expecting to be replaced by a superior version of itself (ex- PS, PS2, PS3 and Xbox, Xbox 360).
