Let's be real. Are you compensating for something with your Stats? Namely, K/D?

Posted by BOps2PI on Feb 24, 2013 3:12 PM

I've been playing video games for longer than the majority who play this game have been alive I'm sure (Since roughly 85 with Atari). With that being said, I've seen the scene and different genres grow and change be it console, computer or arcade. In those many many years of "gaming" I've played along side (arcade) and/or with people from all walks of life, race, color creed, etc.

With that out of the way, I've known people from back in the Street Fighter days at the arcade who clearly didn't have much going for them in their personal life. They usually told you or wore it on their sleeves, or you simply knew first hand because you went to school with them. Is it bad that their outlet is Video Games? No. I'm not saying that and let's make that very clear. Is it sad, that their gaming identity turns into their control in which they try and use to manipulate their friends' outlook on them? YES!

So...How many of you playing this game and go straight to "Stats" such as K/D and/or what camos you have to boost your self-esteem? Your gaming persona, does it run your life? Do you think about it throughout your day? Do you tell your friends while you're out and about and not in game? I'm just curious because stats get thrown around a lot and the whole Cyber Bully thing goes along with it. Some of us use stats as a gauge for our own personal gratification, and a whole lot of others use it for their virtual social status.

Where do you fall in this? I'm guessing this will strike a nerve and won't get many hits and die down in a day or two, but hey. I'm hoping it reaches out to some of you, and makes you think twice about life, and how this game may effect your future. I have two boys, 8 mos and 8 years, and you're going to be their bosses, co-workers, etc. I need to know that there are stable human beings out there, and role models outside of my wife and I parenting.

Maybe you are just as guilty of judging others? That makes you just as bad as those you are condemning. Do what makes you happy, and let others do their thing.

I personally don't care about my stats. I use them to motivate myself to continue to improve. And quite happy with my life, thanks.

I don't think I'm really that bothered about my stats, I guess I use them so my friends know my playing level without having played me yet, but that's the really the only time I'd be talking about it, when they ask how good I am.

Apart from that it at least lets randoms in lobby's know what to expect of you, but when people take stats to the levels of being "elite" in a game it gets abit sad, games in general are leisure things, people shouldn't get this concerned with them.

    Nice post.

I like my k/d to positive because I like the competitive aspect of the game. And I like it to be positive to feel like I'm contributing to my team. My k/d is average, 1.25 I think. And I mess around with all kinds of guns and attachments so my SPM and k/d aren't as high they could be, but that doesn't bother me any. And if you have a high k/d and you're modest about it then I will tip my hat, but if you're a dbag with your high k/d and act like it matters in the slightest or act like anyone should care then you probably are compensating for something you don't get out of real life.

Firstly, nice thread: a welcome, mature perspective in a world of rampant immaturity. Unfortunately, I don't think you'll see very many people who actually are compensating for something with their stats showing up in here to tell about it.

I am of the mind that stats on a game like Call of Duty are generally worthless. The nature of the game makes them pretty much pointless--if it weren't for lag, boosters, and glitches, then maybe they'd mean something, but anyone who thinks that stats on this game in its current state amount to any more than a few intangible lines of code are kidding themselves.

I can say with utmost sincerity that I don't give a fig about stats or camos as status symbols. In every CoD game, I've always used my favourite camo, and I've always stopped prestiging once I got to my favourite emblem (generally, the color red is a common thread here, lol). I don't particularly care about my ratios or stats--as long as I can finish each game knowing I did my best to help my team win, I'm happy (I'd almost prefer it if all my stats had completely bogus numbers so neither I nor anyone else would ever be able to track them for real). I'm a competitive person, so naturally I want to win every time I play--it's very satisfying to win. But at the same token, I try to help others find ways to play better whenever I can, and I force myself to remember that the most important thing is to just give it your best shot and having fun doing it, because if you're not enjoying yourself, you really shouldn't be playing the game.

As Juan Manuel Fangio once said, "You must always strive to be the best, but never believe that you are."

Here is an interesting news article about this subject that I read a while back, I guess it kind of stuck with me because I see it all over forums like this.

I am competitive. I want to be the BEST I can at everything I do. This is not compensating for anything, nor trying to make myself look better than I am. I have a "I want to win at everything" attitude. Most of the last 2 generations have gotten awards and told they are wonderful for just showing up or writing their name. They lack the drive to be great and don't care. I am from a different school as to where if you want to win or get an award you MUST work for it.

In my personal life I play basketball in about 10 different leagues throughout the year and our team wins 95% of the games we play. I am in a car club and my car takes trophies at every show. I play golf and have improved my game from being a 90-95 to around 75-80 over the course of about 5-6 years. My biggest competitor is MYSELF. I am hard on myself because I want to be successful in ALL I do.

This is why I like to have good stats. Not just K/D, but SPM AND W/L.
