Quality........not....quantity please!!!!

Posted by DaStrinix on Sep 9, 2012 1:00 PM

I put in Black Ops this week, played it, and was dumbfounded at how poorly it played. Last night i put MW3 back in and was just as amazed at how awful it played.  Between people skipping across the screen, the headshots that don't count/ terminator syndrome/hit detection, and the ever constant curse of becoming the host; i and alot of people have grown to despise this system.

I think Black Ops 2 has awsome potential.  I love the idea of complete customization, and i really like the idea of a point system. I really think its ingenious.

Out of all the issues i could see being with this game or that might arise out of the this game wether it be weapons, spawns, or camping; my only problem is with the hosting system.  I am tired of this cheap match making system.  I can deal with everything else.  I am fine with every other part of MW3 or Black Ops with the exception of how awful this game performs on the network.  The last two Cods have played like junk with the hosting system.  Has anything been done to update or improve its functionality?  Black Ops 2 is using MW3's graphics engine does that mean they're going to use the same low performance hosting system or have they upgraded that too.

I really do like how Treyarch focuses on customization; Black Ops was great and very orginal.  Its only downfall in my opinion was the hosting system.

I know there are alot of ps3 users out there who feel the same way; for those of us who have been loyal customers and patient; we really have legitimate concerns.

Totally, absolutely, 100% my thoughts having just done the same thing this last 2 days, having witnessed my mates do the same and feel the same and having felt this way for a while now, after 2 years of hurt.

    Well said.

For my part I've decided to take control over the things I can control. I'm biding my time until BOII and if it is the 3rd year of this tragedy - basically an experience not worth having - then myself and my mates will retire from COD and look to find another online experience that is challenging, fun and satisfying. We may have to wait a while and there's a fair chance it won't be a FPS, but there's no substitute for quality and after 2 years, I have now learnt where my patience ends.

        I almost feel like saying:

        - if it's gonna frustrate, then just put us out of our misery and make an awful game, rather than a well-thought out one that fails often. Kind of like, if you're gonna let me down or dump me, then do it properly, honestly and cleanly...

        so I can move on.

No way, hahaha! It will be like IW....they will make themselves look good and talk themselves up. they will get your hopes up and right when you trust em enough to take em home.....they will screw you, take your money, and never call you again. Just like those other bastards MW2, BLOPS, MW3, BATTLEFIELD). hahaha! It's all they can do to get your $60.00-$120.00.

Totally agree this is why i think cod4 was so good it was simple, the quality was top notch but was simple gun on gun. Were now you have all these themes, call signs, emblems, killstreaks, camos ect.... I feel the more they add the experience suffers as less time goes on the player experience and quality.

They need to ditch this premium crap and focus on making a game that works for everyone in place of a game that works for some people some of the time.

Exactly!!! I love Cod 4 and its still my favorite of them all. Nothing too complicated just straightforward action.

I wonder how bo2 turns out

Don't shoot me, but I'm most looking forward to the campaign and zombies. My multiplayer shelf will be pretty dusty before Christmas me thinks.

But yes, what makes or breaks a twitch shooter seems always to be the netcode.

MW2 - Horrible game, brilliant netcode.

Black Ops - Brilliant game, horrible netcode.

Find the best of both worlds for pity's sake!

I agree wholeheartedly. The lack of info on netcode improvementa. Well isn't too disturbing, since the game cost me nothing. Though, I want to enjoy it regardless. Vahn said they have a matchmaking system. Well, they all have. Did they work past MW2..no. not very well.

I'm starting to wonder, but I could be very well wrong as this is just my conspiracy, lol.

I've noticed in games that have good, or well game devs that listen to their community a lot, they may purposely be making it bad, or just leaving things out.

Now that sounds stupid, I know, but Activision wants money, and they get money by making a CoD Every year that promises NEW features mostly. Now, if they made a "Perfect" Call of Duty, what would be the point of making one ever year? And i'm talking about a game with great connection, great gameplay and community support.

I know hardly any people on here may not play sports game, but I do, and in a game (NBA2k11,) they made a gamemode which has been the best feature they've ever made so far in a Basketball game according to many players of the game, yet they've taken it out last year, and seems this year but at the same time are listening to the community to include many huge features, and I mean a lot.

But why not have the old feature(Called Crew mode.) when the community loved it? It could just because they can't code it along with everything else and are having troubles, or they want to hold it out so people keep buying their games next year.

Again it may sound stupid, but hey, money needs to keep rolling.

    lul.

It's not a silly conclusion. It does happen, but perhaps less obviously that you have said.

Here's what I mean. If you want to release one game every 5 years and make it a great game OR if you want to make a great game and you have 5 years, by the time you have finished it and people have played it a lot (say 2 years later, total 7 years since initiation of project), then technology has moved on and your new game (which is probably 2-3 years into its own cycle will be a seriously different game come release (a further 2 years, 4-5 since last release).

In other words if you make a beast of a game, you're naturally making the best you can and the time cycles for a sequel will allow for that to be the best too.

Quality and time here allow for monster games each time. Elder Scrolls and GTA have this concept.

However with a 2 year development cycle overseen by the company that releases from the franchise every year you naturally come to the conclusion that there is not enough time to "go for perfect", there is a need for a game to be "different and not an update" as the technology has not moved on enough. Ultimately fixes will show up earlier games as substandard or aged, improvements to what is not broken will smell of a makeover rather than a new game, features or systems that work may not work with all the other gloss.

So yes, there is a minor conspiracy, it's possibly one mad money hungry guy but more likely the nature of the set-up and all its ins and outs combined. If people make money they are less likely to question it, if the game sells well it's a huge critical rating right there, if it even wins awards (Black Ops did) then it's easier to overlook problems.

I also think that ChestSplitter/esmorgue is partially right too. These 2 year cycle games are a bit like beta games and this is even moreso with the associated gaming technology such as matchmaking systems.

Can you see the offices planning their budgets and schedules. Matchmaking is huge and probably should have been outsourced to a whole different expert solutions company. I think it's easier to make a whistles and bells, blow you away all thrills game than put work into something unassured and time-consuming that maybe takes 5 years to workout.

They want money, they get money by releasing a new title as often as possible, we can expect to see the quality of our online gaming experience decrease if we continue buying into this company that doesn't respect it's consumers.  I love this game, but the way it's headed, BOPS2 will be my last, I refuse to purchase another CoD that is made by IW.  3ARC has always impressed me with their communication to it's players.  They can have my money anytime.

It's the way it is. For all Black Ops merits, the matchmaking, hosting and lag is awful and even worse, it's awfully inconsistent (which gives false hope and a kind of dishonesty). Just like for all Black Ops criticisms, the game had some great ideas, balance and design.

We all wish for the 2 events (of quality online experience and great game) to coincide.

I worry for Black Ops II, I also hope.

As was my humble/enraged opinions so many battlefields ago. Concept, simplicity was there... Though, no consistency. As you pointed out about the hosting. Black Ops was the first I despised and saw others despise the hosting. It was so iffy, I went and downgraded to nearly the service I had with CoD4.

Call of duty is built around the xbox, it has been since WaW, myself as an xbox fanboy (i do have a PS3 but never use it) do find it unfair that the Playstation guys don't get the same "game" we do on the xbox. Without being an ass, buy an xbox if you want to play Cod.

Both have problems. If it were built for Xbox. We wouldn't get it. Beat it.

I have both. Have played the game and MW3 on both. Poor matchmaking experiences. I totally understand the point of view of a PS3 Confederate. I am Vet of the Confederate States. I have been in the struggle for a long time. IMHO, this problem that hopefully is making a turn for the better..didn't start until Black Ops. Hopefully things will become better throughout the CoD Nation with this game.

I like that hope of yours, it's infectious. Something has to improve. "How much" is not as crucial as a turn in the right direction. "How much" will just show how bad things have been or hint at how difficult it has been to appease all interests (playability, sales, branding, marketing strategy/honesty etc.).

It is in everyone's interests* that the functionality improves now, to be eventually taken to a point of greatness in the near future. It will improve online reviews, customer satisfaction, customer sales, brand quality and secure a positive community and future community of gamers.

(* it's not in the interests of an alternate company lurking with a new product to capture dissatisfied customers and new customers alike, but hey, that too is the nature of consumerism. If something is not fixed now, there will be a market for these people to corner).

I keep some hope for a better day, mainly because even with the simplicity of CoD4, W@W..they still managed to spawn MW2. Which added new features and content, interaction with KSs. Plus have a remarkable Matchmaking system. Whether I ran on a 8d 400kbps up service or 50d 5up service things were loveable. Hosting was not an issue on the latter progressions in service up to 50d 5up (15-1, 15-2, 30-3). When Black Ops released (also leading up to) I was pumped not only because of the new iteration, but because of the war criminals destroying the forefathers. Yet, disappointed. Mainly because of connectivity.

I sincerely hope they have worked well with IW on the server side connectivity. I've had discussions with someone who has said they have been nailing down issues jointly. We will see. Not in the first month, but in due time....Lord willing.

That sirs, will be the deal breaker.

You make it sound like you wouldn't be buying the game, lol.  That's the problem, too many people jump the gun on the early promotion give-a-ways and get the game w/o knowing how it will play.  Then complain when it sucks.  Not this guy.  I have ordered the Hard-on edition, but will refrain from opening it for at least a few weeks.  If the lag is the same as last time around, out on Ebay my copy goes.

No way I could manage that. As soon as I get it in the post, all bets are off for the next few days. I'll rush over to the package waiting in the hallway, hack my way through the cardboard with my bare hands, throw the remaining packaging, sellotape and plastic out of the window for good measure, bite my way through the steelbook case, shove the disc straight into the PS3, quickly slap on the kettle and make myself a cup of tea that I probably won't drink all the while experiencing minor spasms of excitement. I'm like a child at Christmas come November.

Fair, but someone has to play the game 1st for you to be able to read up on reviews.  If everyone did what you did...

I would gladly pay $200/year for performance hosted gameplay. I wish sony (or anybody for that matter) would get serious about this online play. The hardware sucks too with all of this extra crap that I don't want (a crummy browser, jukebox, netflix, mailbox, and all the other crap). If it only played games and dvd's it would be a better, faster system. The main menu has like 40 options when it should have only 3 (on, off, play game/movie). I would love for it to be faster and not have all of that worthless **** that prob 1% of people use. It takes longer to boot than my computer......why?

It's not the PS3, unless you or someone doesn't maintenance it. Xbox has way more featured crap than I care to see. Though if you don't DL it, you don't boot it. People put way to much stock in this "its the SEN". Until they get the netcode back to at least MW2 status, well with the security improvements included, the game and matchmaking will be screwed. No matter what tribe you suit up with.
