"Here's a storming idea for Black Ops II"?

Posted by Never2Rusty on Jul 29, 2012 4:56 AM

DYNAMIC WEATHER!! weather change in multiplayer. evry map u play it could be different weather?? mixing it up right? wa do u think. so one half is cloudy then it gets foggy or stormy or another sunny then cloudy, hailstorm to hurricane. dunno if its tht simple but wuld make it  a better experience

If weather could be realistically placed into multiplayer without having any single negative effect on the game, then fantastic!

    Some notes, however...

    - Weather is unlikely to vary across maps of COD size within the time of a match (weather fronts and weather change do happen in real life BUT one experiences them over larger areas and time frames such that representing this in COD would seem contrived and have a 'TRUMAN SHOW' effect). This will then do 2 things to your suggestion: remove localised weather; remove changing weather.

    - Better then if each map simply has 1-5 different potential states of play from for example: heavy rain, light rain (drizzle), overcast, blue sky sunshine, clouds rolling across sunny sky, light snow, heavy snow, wind before storm. You could also introduce different lightning scales here too, twilight, midday, midnight, etc.

    - So, rather than have random and untested changes and parameters, better to stick with gametested scenarios. This in itself would lead to just a few map scenario variables.

    - An example on BO could've been on JUNGLE. 1. Jungle afternoon heavy rain, 2. Jungle night light rain, 3. Jungle morning blue sky sunshine.

However, like I said at the start - nothing, I repeat nothing should demote functionality of the game and I feel anything storing data or running programs would do this. It may just be easier to run clichéd weather for each map environment, as is the case now.

This would be awesome and I've mentioned this a couple times. The only problem I forsee is there being too much dynamic and thus effecting the functionality of the gameplay

Especially since Black Ops II will be using an older engine it's hard to tell if it will be able to handle this kind of advanced programming, even though they say it's the better of the four models

I almost can guarantee that the game will look the same except for some lighting.

The game will look the same... as the first Black Ops? From a PS3 user's perspective, I sincerely hope not! XD

Also, due to the resolution change to 880x720 the game image might appear "taller" and less wide, but not everyone will percieve the difference.

Nor do I. My point is they never point out that they improve the engine to handle better online with connectivity. They continue to point out they are making thegame look better. Though in IMO, that only translates to SP.

i kinda like the idea but it is not nearly the best idea ever, i hate when people have thread titles like that, at least this one wasn't in caps

ive been wanting something like this since waw weather changes and night and day changes aswell it would be great playing a map in the snow at night then playing the same map a few games later in daylight with rain

Interesting idea, but the limitations of the id tech 3 engine means they can't

    Ah well, that blew over.

Well at this idea will make playing more variable. The only thing is you should have a choice of which weather with a vote, like for example: NukeTown 2025 (Thunderstorm), NukeTown 2025 (Sunny)

I agree with you... except for the weather changing during the match. Everytime you enter the map, it should be different. But stay the same through the match

Or, one or two of the weather programs could actually be "Rain to Sunshine" for example, weather does end and it does end in 7 minutes - what you mean is that a type of weather lasts a long time (a day or 4 hours or maybe 45 minutes) so sampling just 7 minutes is unlikely to be the end/start of it.

        Here's a few.

        - heavy rain (downpour, poor visibility)

        - light rain (drizzle)

        - scattered showers sunbreaks (sunshine, cloud, rain, rainbow on map)

        - overcast (indescrimate cover of cloud-)

        - cloudy (fluffy white clouds moving across sky)

        - partial sun/cloud (sunspots and fluffy clouds)

        - windy (small objects move, trees bend, movement impeded, etc.)

        - storm (combo of heavy rain + windy, both in this list)

        - heavy snow (thick, poor visibility)

        - light snow

        - sunny (clear or 90% clear sky)

        + VARIOUS TRANSITIONS

(eg. rain to shine, light rain becomes partial cloud/sun and then sunny)

Note: There is often a consequence or accummulation of weather so that would need to be considered. For example heavy snow would pile up and would have to be on a map that either has heavy snow or will have by the end.

I'd say this is a PS4 job, looks big to me.

I prefer the time of day concept over weather, but if the maps become more dynamic in any way, ignoring rockets launching, screens shaking, trains whistling by, I'm happy.

Time of day is very relevant. Think about the atmosphere and lighting through the day cycle of a game like RED DEAD REDEMPTION for example.

I think time of day is so much easier to impliment than weather. All that's being done is adjusting the light sources in each map, whereas weather means adjusting so many more elements like the ambient sound of the map, textures and the physics of more wind. As you said Robbie, weather in FPS's sounds like something for the next-gen consoles.
