This is a copy-paste of my entry on the Steam forums on the same issue. Activision needs to acknowledge and fix this as most people (myself included) don't want to drag their PC off/part way out of a desk to yank the keyboard USB every time they want to boot the game. So, Activision, please pass the information on to the relevant department and see about getting it sorted. DXdiag is appended to the end of the post.

I'm having the same issue too. I too use a Corsair Vengeance mouse and keyboard, M90/K90 I think. Long story short, I can confirm that unplugging both the keyboard USB and the hub USB (the K90 uses the two USB cables so it's not sharing bandwidth) got the game to boot up and using the mouse to navigate the autosave warning then plugging the keyboard back in after clicking 'okay' got the game working just fine without any further issues. I tested it with both a 360 control pad and mouse and keyboard controls (even plugged the 360 pad into the keyboard) and it worked just fine for several hours.

From what little I understand/know it appears to be attempting to access a variable that's been set to NULL and that causes an instant crash on most systems.

This happens when the programmer has coded something that uses a variable, possible a one-use variable that's used in startup (in this case it appears to be related to the keyboard, but I don't know the game's code so I can't go into any more depth about that) and when that variable is finished with the programmer will free it up and set it to NULL (e.g.

free *imaginaryVariable;

*imaginaryVariable = NULL;

)

This is used as a kind of defence against errors in programming because you can't access that variable anymore, any pointers trying to return a NULL value and the program crashes, this is a great way to know there's an error when you're working on the program.

My guess is that the devs or testing departments have overlooked something relating to keyboards (possibly the way the drivers store the keypresses being input, or the status of the USB port - I've noticed that the keyboards people are reporting, and the one I use myself, also act as a USB hub) and more specifically modern gaming keyboards and this is causing the issue.

I doubt the devs look here so I'm going to post this same post over on their forums/send it in to their support department and see if we can't help them get a patch out for this ASAP and get the game up to par as it should be.

I can't believe the issues this game has. It really is a shame to have an ortherwise great game ruined by such issues. I actually feel bad for buying it legitimately to support what I thought would be a good game. Now I know not to support bad ports I guess. For the most part I don't pirate stuff, but with some games such as this. it makes me wonder if I should do unless I know that it deserves my money. Too bad the studio closed down, I liked prototype 1 and do #2 without the horrible issues.
