Using a cue built into the game is hardly cheating. There are multiple ways to identify enemies in this game. For me, my eyesight isn't all that great, so players have a spot advantage over me. I like my Trittons because I can hear the directional sound. I don't sit around waiting, but guess what.. if I hear you coming from my left, why shouldn't I turn that direction?
The point is pretty moot on team matches. There is so much ambient sound its hard to differentiate footsteps from the explosions and teammates running around, but it can be a great tool in slower paced maps or 1v1s.
As for the OP, I commend your ingenuity. He is just making the point that while not everyone has room in the budget for expensive headsets, there are less expensive ways to get similar results.
