Why is matchmaking so bad?

Even when I disable the map packs if I have anyone else my party, it takes ~5 minutes to find a game. Isn't matchmaking and gameplay supposed to be better with a bigger population? I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

This might be because your friends connection. It might say that he has an open connection but it does not like to connect to every game. I have a couple of friends that when I’m searching with them I absolutely cannot find a game.

  Nah, that's impossible. When I play with my girlfriend who is in the same house (she's got her own box) it also takes forever. (Our NAT is open).
  
  Even when I search alone it takes quite awhile. Pretty bad
