    If you tried to go through the front door they would drop boiling water or oil on your head or they shoot arrows at you.  With the cannon you could make your own door and avoid the traps.  With mortars(yes they had them) they would drop huge sphere rocks on you which proved to be far more dangerous than any catapult when it cames to destroying buildings.
