For Any ADSL Gamer's That Cannot Connect To Online Services. ( Sticky Please )

Ok so this may only help ADSL gamers here in the UK but it might help those in other countries.

Basically I bought this game for my brother in law and he could not connect to the online services, I setup the DMZ on his router and forwarded the port's did basically everything you could think of.

Still it did not work so I started searching the net and found this little bit of information and after I changed it, the game started connecting to the online services with no problem's.

I checked the other games and downloads etc and they all worked perfectly fine, but you may not have the same result's so it's not 100% accurate that it will work but more than likely it will.

Ok here is the information.

Make sure DMZ is active within the router, if you get asked for a DMZ Server IP then enter your pc's IP address something like 192.168.0.2 but to find out your IP do the following.

Click Start

In the Search Program's And Files Box at the bottom type CMD and press enter, you will then get a Black Dos type box open and in that box type IPCONFIG and look for the numbers next to IPV4 or IPV6 whichever you are using and that is your pc's IP.

Once you have done that you need to make sure that UPNP is enabled.

Then you need to go to ADSL Setting's and change the following setting's

Multiplexing or something similar, and change from AC BASED to LLC BASED

DSL Mode need's to be changed from Auto (Multi-Mode) to ADSL2+ or ADSL or ADSL2 which ever your's is most of the time it will be ADSL2+ though.

Make sure within Window's Firewall or your alternative, that both MW3 multiplayer and singleplayer are allowed through the Home, Business and Public Network's so that you know the Firewall is not hindering the game from connecting.

After you have done all that reboot the Router and reboot the PC

Once everything is back up and running, try to play the game and if it connect's make sure that your other games etc connect to the net and you are able to play, if it still does not connect or some of your other games cannot be played then you need to revert all the setting's and try something else.

As I say this is not 100% going to work for everyone but I am confident it will work for 99% of the UK gamers.

I am not sure if this will work for Non UK gamers but it is worth a try to see if it does or not.

Hope this help's people out there.

whoa hold your horses there ...This is some really bad advice to be giving on a public forum.

so you put your brother in laws pc in the dmz on the router? that is a seriously BAD idea, and something i would NEVER advise anyone to do especially a pc.

All you need to do is correctly set up the correct ports to forward and thats it , no need to use the dmz function a all ever. All you have done is open his pc up to every single nasty thing on the internet now.

You really shouldn't be advising people to change ANY of those settings you mentioned, it worked for you as obviously the router wasnt correctly set up in the first place, the settings you have suggest to change will screw up alot of peoples adsl connections as they relate to specific types of connections like pppoa and pppoe.

The ONLY thing you need to do to connect online with a pc is correctly forwarded ports and make sure the permissions in whatever firewall software you run is set to allow the game traffic through.

      that doesn't always work:

just have to install and use a fire wall on you client; something better then windows fire wall.

ZoneAlarm is a great free personal firewall; and there are pleant others to choos from.

or go cnet.com/downloads http://download.cnet.com/windows/3150-20_4-0.html?filter=licenseName=Free&tag=rb _wrap;rb_content;main search for personal firewalls

im very familar with firewalls thanks, but my points stand, you should never put a pc in the dmz .period. Relying on software based firewalls alone is a seriously bad idea, and most of the off the shelf popular ones like zonealarm ect are easily bypassed,

im not knbocking the op just pointing out to others the inherient dangers of doing what he suggested,

there should be a a whacking great disclaimer on his post warning people and anyone who starts fiddling with settings that WILL affect their adsl connection should do so very carefully making sure they write every setting down BEFORE changing it as when it goes tits up as it will..they will need to reset everything back to a working state.

What are you? a banc? a secret services data center? if you're using  a router it means you're using muliple clients (i would assume) why would you keep any senitive data on your game/ web browsing computer; that's computer science 101. afraid some will find your porn?

          stop being so paranoid.

"bad advice to give on a pulic forum"? hell. all he did ,was save the guy from Googling it him self. this advice was given to "anyone who has tried everything else"

"write every setting down"? never heard of "reset"?

not all router have the same firmware (some: belkin for example; won't let you forward every port) besides that it's on the other side of the already firewalled moderm.

I only bumped it, be cause im to lazy to go google it again.

and i apritiate his trying to HELP the community.

actually very close to the truth there oh and a holder of a valid ccie in both security and routing and switching so erm guess i do actually know what im talking about here.

not nessacarily mosy uk isps give routers as standard, and most people usualy have one pc or laptop, its got nothing to do with sensative data its just basic security, leaving your pc the wrong side of the dmz is like going out leaving your door wide open and writting a note saving please dont enter.

and yes bad advice, as the advice he gave would and could stop alot of peoples adsl from working as it invovled screwing with settings that are meant for one type of connection not multiple types.Given the it will work for 99% of the people line compounded it, Im not having ago at the op just pointing out stuff that needed pointing out.

oh and yes i have actually heard of resets.. the reason i didnt say reset is simply as in doing so it wipes all the stored settings on the router, so given the majority of people dont bother to write them down in the first place reseting would mean they couldnt get online possibly which would be bad as they probably would need to , to find out from their isp what settings they needed to put to get online. kinda basic pro tip for free there call it computer sceience 101 for dummies if you like.

think your confusing yourself between adsl and cable, very rare to find anyone using a modem and a router on adsl most people just have one piece of equipment in the uk that being..a router.

and yes again nothing against the op he was trying to help the community but has basically copy and pasted a "fix" off the net without really understanding the implications of that "fix" hence i stepped in.

Ah: you may be right about that; I'm in the U.S; and here even DSL users have modems, and routers (which covers most of your issues)

in fact that seems strange to me, but I'll take your word for for it.

maybe it's just the language barrier: you know: I say elevator, and you say lift....:)

in any case if what you're saying is true (and I have no reason to doubt you) then by all means there is a concern.

              Off the subject:

This is interesting to me; I like to learn new things.

are you saying that everyone on DSL in england uses a modem/router combo, of some sort?

I supose that would make life a little simpler, to some point.

I know At&T has a set up like that; so I've read.

But when i used DSL the modems where seperate; so i wouldn't know if they have changed that much.

yep in uk (cant speak for rest of europe adsl (we dont get dsl they dont like us having great upload speeds i think ) isps usually provide a free bog standard router/modem in fact cant think of a single isp that gives modems to be honest guess its just how things progressed in different countries
