im very familar with firewalls thanks, but my points stand, you should never put a pc in the dmz .period. Relying on software based firewalls alone is a seriously bad idea, and most of the off the shelf popular ones like zonealarm ect are easily bypassed,
im not knbocking the op just pointing out to others the inherient dangers of doing what he suggested,
there should be a a whacking great disclaimer on his post warning people and anyone who starts fiddling with settings that WILL affect their adsl connection should do so very carefully making sure they write every setting down BEFORE changing it as when it goes tits up as it will..they will need to reset everything back to a working state.
What are you? a banc? a secret services data center? if you're using a router it means you're using muliple clients (i would assume) why would you keep any senitive data on your game/ web browsing computer; that's computer science 101. afraid some will find your porn?

not all router have the same firmware (some: belkin for example; won't let you forward every port) besides that it's on the other side of the already firewalled moderm.
I only bumped it, be cause im to lazy to go google it again.
and i apritiate his trying to HELP the community.

not nessacarily mosy uk isps give routers as standard, and most people usualy have one pc or laptop, its got nothing to do with sensative data its just basic security, leaving your pc the wrong side of the dmz is like going out leaving your door wide open and writting a note saving please dont enter.
and yes bad advice, as the advice he gave would and could stop alot of peoples adsl from working as it invovled screwing with settings that are meant for one type of connection not multiple types.Given the it will work for 99% of the people line compounded it, Im not having ago at the op just pointing out stuff that needed pointing out.
oh and yes i have actually heard of resets.. the reason i didnt say reset is simply as in doing so it wipes all the stored settings on the router, so given the majority of people dont bother to write them down in the first place reseting would mean they couldnt get online possibly which would be bad as they probably would need to , to find out from their isp what settings they needed to put to get online. kinda basic pro tip for free there call it computer sceience 101 for dummies if you like.

think your confusing yourself between adsl and cable, very rare to find anyone using a modem and a router on adsl most people just have one piece of equipment in the uk that being..a router.
and yes again nothing against the op he was trying to help the community but has basically copy and pasted a "fix" off the net without really understanding the implications of that "fix" hence i stepped in.

Ah: you may be right about that; I'm in the U.S; and here even DSL users have modems, and routers (which covers most of your issues)
in fact that seems strange to me, but I'll take your word for for it.
maybe it's just the language barrier: you know: I say elevator, and you say lift....:)
in any case if what you're saying is true (and I have no reason to doubt you) then by all means there is a concern.
Off the subject:
This is interesting to me; I like to learn new things.
are you saying that everyone on DSL in england uses a modem/router combo, of some sort?
I supose that would make life a little simpler, to some point.
I know At&T has a set up like that; so I've read.
But when i used DSL the modems where seperate; so i wouldn't know if they have changed that much.

actually i learnt english the american way so i say elevator too and spell without that pesky extra u in words;)
yep in uk (cant speak for rest of europe adsl (we dont get dsl they dont like us having great upload speeds i think ) isps usually provide a free bog standard router/modem in fact cant think of a single isp that gives modems to be honest guess its just how things progressed in different countries
