Great write up! This is exactly what I've been looking for...
I just got comcast's 15mb up plan and it still doesn't seem like enough to keep me at 4 bars consistantly in Black Ops. I will definitely try out these methods though and see what I can do to keep up with the competitive curve.
One of the main things I see you mention that has me worried about my setup is I'm still using the router Comcast gave me. This seems like it could be a major part in why my connection seems slower. Having said that, can anyone recommend a good router for gaming? I'm looking to spend no more than $100 so anything in that price range would be awesome!
Thanks again for the great post!

for gaming its not so much your download bandwidth. its your upload and your ping. try searching local only and see what your upload cap is. the higher (to an extent) the more likely youll be chosen to host.

My Netgear N300 is doing fairly well.
Opinons on this are nescesary. I used to love Linksys, but I had an E3000 crap out on me.

I have a Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 Modem and a DLink DGL-4500 Gamefuel Router. Up until recently hadn't had any issues. Been getting a limited or no connectivity error a lot lately. I have 2 xbox's, my tv, and dvr wired. My PS3 and two laptops on wireless. And sometimes my phone too. I have never messed with any settings on my router or any of my devices. Any advice to stop that error? Starting to be a pain in the butt having to reset my stuff all the time. Also it usually seems to happen only when multiple devices are used.

Well I bought the Netgear N600 last night... Right after installing it, I noticed a pretty significant difference while playing Black Ops... I was getting 4 bar consistantly. There were only a few times where it dropped to 3 bar that I saw and even that was for a split second.
I also tried out the Google DNS numbers and that seemed to work well too... When I restarted my xbox, it logged into xbox live immediately. Usually there is a noticeable load lag. Awesome! I'm going to try the other method of finding the best DNS connection locally tonight and see if that makes things any better.
Again, thanks for the post!

Yeah, the program he referened told me that openDNS was considerably faster than google's DNS for my area. I notice the same too.
