1. The lag problem is beyond fixing, in my opinion. (While I notice in the last two days things are better when I host, it is still completely luck of the draw which person in any one match will get the magical advantage over the rest of the lobby.)
But the issue is that in the last two days in at least every lobby I was in there was one person bragging about "gaming" the system by running torrents, uploads, etc during the host selection process and connection sync process to saturate their upstream bandwidth and trick the lag comp calculation. (I'm not giving any more detail than that because I don't want anyone abusing this "feature").
But anyway, it's too late to fix the lag comp because so many people are messing with their connections now to get around it. So I am sad to say it appears the window of opportunity has closed on fixing this problem because no matter what they tweak we will have to put up with people "managing" their lag for the rest of the lifetime of this game.
2. The "in-game" bars are not exactly accurate. If you want to see the "real" connection that everyone has, watch the scoreboards during intermission (in S&D or whatever) or immediately after or before a match begins. While the gameplay is not "Active" you will see the true connections of the players. When the game becomes active you will see the comp'ed connections of the players. It's quite interesting and you may find out your lobby of five 4-bars and five 3-bars is actually a lobby with one 4-bar host, three 3-bar players, 4 yellows and 2 reds.

I noticed a change in bars when the match starts quite often but I'm not sure what you mean when you say that the real connection shows in the scoreboards? Are you on xbox or is this a pc feature? I often see that dead players drop one bar and always thought this is because the host doesn't give them full bandwidth for they're not active at the moment.

Yes, nothing will change as long as you can get a advantage by making your connection worse. If you could win a race by getting the smallest engine and profit from "compensation seconds" people would do it too.
G IH A IN ID II ive got a question for your developers:
While watching some of my demos i saw a 100-150ms difference between me and the server (while fighting three-bar players). How is that possible if im host?
Are you really adding artifical latency to the host connection?
PS3 patch isnt out yet so i cant test if the updaterate change help.

I feel this same way about it being a little "too late". I remember in CoD4 and W@W, MW2 if someone started watching Pewtube or doing in any serious searching on your computer while you were gaming, you knew it. You could maintain a good connection up until that point, then you would drop down 1-2 bars instantly. Now, I mean this based off having a 8Mbps down 5-600kbps up service then. I always got into <50-<70ms lobbies then. Upraded my service to 15Mbps down 2.5Mbps because if I was doing well and the host left, and there was no possible choice...SOL. So I made an adjustment that benefitted me and the community in a sense.
Since Black Ops with this ridiculous notion that those that choose to keep their service at the rate that it is, should completely be handed out an advantage for "lagging" behing others is completely absurd. Now i know that their has to be some kind of compensation for differences in latency between all players in the lobby, but how it is now for hosting is in no way fair or balanced to the people that are hosting, or those that are the optimal choice for next host, if the host leaves.
Also this swapping of hosts is ridiculous every match. How can all the same people in the same lobby run on one host and then after the match, it will switch to some random guy that will have completely no reason hosting? You can hae 4 bars through virtualy the whole match and can tell that the game isnt very much off. Next match with the same people in the lobby you can have 3 bars, almost feeling that you are teetering on the brink of 2. Then look at the scoreboard and see a guy that had 2-3 bars last match has 3-4.

out of interest how did you measure this 100-150ms difference?
you do realise a 3bar player has a ping of approx 100-199ms right? theres the difference right there

Spawn trapping is always going to happen. if someone doesnt get there sissified tail to the objective and keep it from happening....whomever is just screwed. It would be totally unfair to just give the "trapped team" an advantage to shoot all the "trappers" in the back for strategically positioning themselves to haave the advantage over the "trapped". It is a competitve game. There are no need for hand out. If you want a hand out. When the match is over, just ask the other team to give you at least a chance. Only solution.

G IH A IN ID II,
Thanks to the team for releasing the last PC patch. However, while the accidental akimbo buff has been fixed on xbox, it hasn't yet been fixed on PC, making the already OP akimbo fmgs significantly worse. Is there an ETA on the PC fix?
Also, I've seen mentioned that the shotgun buff was different between consoles and PC, specifically in damage boost to Spas and 1887. Is there any truth to this?

A demo contains what your client saw and what the server/host saw.
You play the recorded demo and record the output using various hardware .. or you choose to render/upload and download.
With a real "video" of what happend you can use a video editing software or if you want a stopwatch to measure time.
Now you measure how long you saw the enemy and how long it saw you (till you die).
Dang .. theres a difference.
btw i think three bars equals to 75-100ms.
While i expect a difference (due to connection latency) i would expect that difference between server and client to be the latency between server and client.
Now if client and host are on the same console .. where are those 100-150ms are comming from?
From the lagging client? A lagging client adds lag to my client<->server connection?
Doesnt make much sense...unless its artificial and part of this "better" lag compensation (or a bug).
The initial question was more or less rhetorical.. because its difficult for me to proove all that stuff (provide materials/vids/graphics .. PowerPoint slide anyone?
). And ..
.. Devs have to reproduce it anyway...- Report Abuse
