I got an automated call from GameStop telling me that they expect a large crowd for the midnight release and suggested getting there between 6pm and 10pm. I love CoD but I wasn't planning on spending 6 hours at the release event to get it.
Has anyone been through the GameStop midnight release song and dance? How does it usually work?
I went to the midnight release for black ops at gamestop and i arrived at i think 1130 but I'm not completely sure the line was long but not to long and what they were doing was you would walk into the store give them your reciept and they check it off so when the clock strikes 12 they line just starts moving and when you get to the front you give them your reciept they see that it is checked off and they give you your game and you go home.
If they called you then chances are they have a giant log of preorders. I've been to a few midnight releases and never got a call and the wait was maybe 5 mintues. Also are there many places to buy mw3 in your area?
This is a call of duty game tho i wouldn't be surprise if there is a big line for the midnight release.
I live 20 minutes North of Dallas Texas in a city that has 3 malls and an infinite number of mom and pop game shops. In fact... There are 8 GameStops in close proximity to my house when I look it up on Google Maps. In short: There are plenty of places to buy MW3.
I am hoping that this was just a precautionary call but I don't want to screw up and find out that my pre-ordered Hardened Edition was given out to someone that camped out for 12 hours.
Where at near dallas? I'm from Garland Texas. If that's the case i would suggest going up there a few hours early and if there is no line come back later. Reason being is there is a lot of people that live in that area and i wouldn't be surprised if it's packed.
The only 'midnight release' I ever did was when I pre-ordered my OG PS3. The EB in my hood was only getting 7 units at launch. All other department stores were getting 1-2 units each but none were allowing pre-orders on those first units.
They started the pre-orders at EB for those first 7 units and I showed up at the mall at midnight so I could be first in line the next morning. Well about 30 minutes after I showed up someone else came, and then another, and another. By 6am there were about 30 people waiting at the mall entrance with hopes to pre-order their PS3 at EB. At 8:30am a security guard came around to let us in. He had been informed as to why we were all there and he said we could enter the mall and form a line outside of EB. EB was only about 30 feet from the mall entrance and when the security guard opened the door I proceeded to walk towards EB only to suddenly be knocked aside by a stampede of eager a-holes!
In other words, once the first 2-3 people got through the door and were calmly walking to the store everyone else started stampeding and the original pecking order was thrown out of wack. Its survival of the fittest I know, but it was still overly rude. Anyways I ended up 7th in line but 5 of the 6 guys infront of me were planning on pre-ordering more than one console..so I was pretty pissed that I was the first one there at midnight and waited for 9 hours only to be 7th in line without a guarantee of even getting one at all.
Well it all turned out because they were only allowing one pre-order per person and being 7th in line meant I got the last one. There were still about 20 people in line after me who all got sent away with nothing, but they only waited a fraction of the time. Although there were 2 or 3 people who were among the original 7 people waiting who didnt get to pre-order.
So I know that really had very little to do with MW3 midnight release but the point of my story is that people are aggressive when it comes to their videogames. People are also determined and dedicated. Personally if I wanted to get the game at midnight then Id probably show up at 6 and just wait the 6 hours, but my plan is to go on my lunch break on Tuesday. No Midnight release for me.
Wow. If someone pushed past me after waiting in line all that time I am pretty sure I would miss the release all together because I would be in jail for pushing their teeth into the back of their head.
This should be a semi-calm affair. I imagine everyone that will be at the midnight release will have already pre-ordered the game (or they will at least have our copies set aside) so we will technically just be there to pick them up. I am still nervous about it because there are always those stories of people who pre-ordered and then got left out in the cold (literally) for one reason or another.
Back then when MW2 came out I spent 8 hours waiting for my game (PC) another 2 loading the game, and the rest of the day sleeping. Only benefit was: free energy drinks, shirts, poster, and cover. In the end it was pointless; so i thought. Next year I deside not to go with my friends to get a copy but load it on steam. I pre-loaded but wasn't able to play until late the next day due to steam not allowing it. People who went for the copy played before me. This year I hope steam lets us get on emidiatly or else.
Cool story...![]()

IF you preorder something, then you should be allowed to pick up that copy anytime that day, as for the shop i'm picking up my hardened edition told me to come by on tuesday, and i'm pretty sure that they don't mean on tuesday midnight LOL.
Well, i kind of hate that the word pre-order isn't what it should be, if you PRE-order something then you already booked it and if you can't come that day, then they should wait for another day before selling it, i've heard and seen people get angry just because they were sick that day and the store had sold it to another customer, that just makes me angry.
Eh have to sleep now, ciao.
Um no the property belongs to activision and stores are not suppose to sell or give any off the games away. Unless activision gives the greenlight you are pritty much accepting stollen property.
The last two midnight releases I went to for MW2 and BO, I left at about 11:40 and got there at about 11:50. Only waited 10 minutes for the line to start moving and I got all the way to the front in less than 5 minutes despite the line leading all the way around the building. And I was the 10th or so person at the back of the line. I expect the same this time, but I'm probably not getting it at midnight release.
Was that at a GameStop?
Yeah.
And your question just reminded me of when I was at the BO midnight release... Some guy was driving next to everyone in the line yelling and bragging that he already got his game at Walmart(our gamestop is literally in the same parking lot as Walmart).
So I'm assuming you can get it at Walmart at midnight too(and probably less people/less wait).
Are all gamestops next to walmart or do we live in the same area?
Not all. I have 4 Gamestops within a few miles from my house. Only 1 of them is next to Walmart. 2 of them are in the same mall. The other is just down the street from there. 2 of them used to be EB games before Gamestop bought them, that is why they're so close together. I live in Taylor, Michigan, you?
I waited for Halo 3 at opry mills. Line was so short and I felt stupid for coming. Mass effect 2 I waited in hermitage at a gamestop and waited 40 mins to get inside showed up at eleven before midnight. And when MW2 came out I waited at that same gamestop and was there at nine.Five guys and me chatted it up and then at 11 the line grew... It went all the way down the strip and around the corner and there was a walmart across the street and it was getting alot of traffic.
So it depends where you live and what the game is. I would play it safe get there as early as you can. I'm showing up at my new gamestop at 7 or so and starting at 8 they are planning events and drawings. So I won't be to bored. And my wife will keep me company. Anyways I'm guessing this will be a busy night especially since cod is the biggest release every year besides like madden and a few other hyped up games. Expect a line if you show up at 11.
Only midnight launch I did was for MW. My gamestop is next to a Buffalo Wild Wings, so I camped out at Wild Wings (drinking and eating) until almost midnight then walked out and stood in line. The line moving was a little slow mainly cause people where breaking in line with their friends but was out of there in 30 minutes.
Word of caution, double check that your game is paid in full! I pre-ordered online but with store pickup. They sent an email saying to go to store before they "close" and pay up. I got there about 5pm and the woman messed around for a minute and said everything was good. I then walked next door to Wild Wings. After midnight when I got to the table, the guy said it wasn't paid in full and had to go to the counter and close it out.
Also a word of caution on walmart, not all will have it for sale at midnight. My local walmart will not get it until the 11th. So if you are planning on using this option you might want to check with the walmart you are going to.
Me too, there's not many people in my area, probably like 20 perhaps. So I don't know. I don't know why they called me when I cancelled awhile ago.
