Your logic is circular! You're not explaining WHY COD IS DIFFERENT from every other video game series. Just because MW2 is a sequel of COD 4 doesn't mean it's COD 6. It's a continuation of the SPIN-OFF of COD 4 that has not yet ended. Just like Fallout: New Vegas is a continuation of Fallout 3. We haven't moved onto Fallout 4 yet. Just as Battlefield BC is a continuation of Battlefield 2, and BC2 is a continuation of BC. Battlefield 3 is a brand new machine.

Is Halo Reach Halo 4? Why not?

Before the Release of BF:BC1 DICE confirmed it was a spin off series, never once did they say it was a carrying on of the main BF series.

Was it you or someone else who said above the Activision confirmed during development of MW2 that it was a spin-off of the first MW? That would be the functional equivalent of what DICE did, really.

Look on google for the announcement of Call of Duty 5, it was then called COD5:W@W by the time it got to E3 the same year the 5 was removed.

MW2 was the start of a spin off series, but it was put on hold because IW where torn apart by Activision

Why don't you see that BECAUSE it was removed (and for other reasons) WAW was not COD 5? They removed it! In fact, if anything, the only reason they even used a number in the first place, I'm betting, was as a working title, not as something they ever really intended to label the game, because there would be no logic in naming a spin-off of COD 4 "COD 5".

So you are implying that we will receive a call of duty 5 at some point?

No. Maybe. I don't know. What I know is, I see no compelling reason to regard the COD series any differently from every other video game series as far as sequential numbering goes. If it truly is just the oddball of the video game world, I have no reason to believe that, yet. The closest I can see to the opposing point of view being correct is that Activision itself has in development stages referred to WAW and MW2 as COD 5 and COD 6, but then they consciously dropped these appellations prior to release. As far as I can tell, they use those names as mere working titles, sort of like how Hollywood uses working titles for movies that are nothing like the titles they give them when they release the movies. That, to me, doesn't disrupt the logic that prevails in the rest of the video game industry.

It's pretty obvious that Halo: Reach was set in a time before H:CE.

Since when does that matter? Vice City took place in time before GTA III did. As did San Andreas. Fallout: New Vegas took place after the events in Fallout 3 took place. When the time period of the game takes place has never been controlling.

Halo Reach isn't considered Halo 4 or Halo 5, or anything but a spin-off of Halo 3, because for some reason this weird sequential logic being discussed here only occurs in the COD community.

Maybe it is Activision's fault. But even if it was, Activision is wrong too. And it's not as if they have actually named any of these spin-offs as COD 5, or COD 6, or anything else. The best argument for the other side that I can see is that they used these titles as working titles during actual development. Which is something Hollywood does, too. But working titles don't mean anything. That's why they're working titles and not actual titles.

If you think about it logically...They are not planning to stop making call of duty games anytime soon..And maybe they thought to themselves. "We do not want the game titles overrun with numbers like final fantasy". And they stopped using numbers, or as you say they are titles the developed use to keep track..Either way, w@w is the 5th installment and is considered cod 5 and there is no proof that there will be a cod gaming coming out with call of duty 5 in the title. I have no idea why people are making such a big deal out of it..It is perfectly logical and reasonable to assume that W@W is call of duty 5 just with out the 5 in there.

I'm saying it all follows the campaign. We're talking about Activision here. Activision has always been strange with numbers in their title. For instance, Guitar Hero: World Tour was implied as GH:WT but has never had the name. Then they had GH5 come out, never giving GH:WT the name of GH4:WT.

I can accept this answer. It's all Activision stupidity.

When I think of a numbered sequel, I think of the next game in the series to have BIG changes. Like the engine, or so many core features that the game doesn't have the same "feel" anymore. At least modern games. Like how GTA IV was extremely different from III and all the spin-offs. Or, like how COD4 was dramatically different from every COD before it. Which is the weird thing here. MW2, WAW, and BO are not dramatically different from COD4. The differences are relatively minor. There has been no big step forward (or backward, with some series). The day that COD takes that big step forward, then it would be worthy of being called COD 5. A new engine, or a series of changes that drastically altered the feel of the game.

And that's why sequential numbering has taken on the form it has with other series in the video game world. I'm not saying there will be a COD 5, but I'm seeing no real proof that WAW and MW2 and BO are CODs 5, 6, and 7, other than that the community has chosen to give them those unofficial nicknames. And this may be because Activision used these numbers during development. And maybe they decided not to keep the numbers upon release for the reasons you state. Or maybe they didn't. But there doesn't seem to be any evidence either way. So until there is, I don't know what's so crazy about assuming that COD is no different from the rest of the video game world.

hate to break it to you, but there is no information on the next cod other than it's coming and the approximate release date. So whatever you read this from is lying.[/quote]

No. Its only a lie if it doesnt happen...

Im quietly confident it will happen and also that it be released in November - 3 months after the 3rd map packs are released for Black Ops
