Slow performance / no GPU usage / low resolution

Updated: 06/15/2009

If you meet the minimum requirements, but still have very low frames per second, then most likely your GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is not being used by the game. The problem looks like this:

First one is of the Activision copyright stuff,
[/url:ap1qc26r]

Next one is the main menu. Just see how long it takes to type "Main Menu"!!
[/url:ap1qc26r]

In order to solve this, try the following (many thanks to Melonhead for finding this!)

Go to your device manager and check if there are a lot of HID devices showing. Disable the ones you don't need, leaving only the essentials like keyboard and mouse. Then try running the game again.

If you still have a problem with slow performance, then probably you set the ingame settings (detail, resolution,...) are too high. Try to reduce those then.
If then there is still a problem, then please post about it in this thread, providing as much detail as possible and attaching a dxdiag.

A limited range of resolution settings is partially done on purpose by the devs in order to keep performance of the game on a high level for low-end cards. In the readme of the game, it states that:

----------------------------------------------

Cards with less than 512 MB cannot access resolutions with widths of greater than 1280 or heights of 720. This means with a card of LESS THAN 512MB VRAM has these available:

640 x 480
800 x 480
800 x 600
1024 x 768
1152 x 720
1152 x 864
1280 x 720
1280 x 800

Cards with less than 1024 MB cannot access resolutions with widths of greater than 1600 or heights of 1080. This means with a card of LESS THAN 1024MB VRAM has these available:

The following are only available for cards with 512MB VRAM or more:
1280 x 1024
1440 x 900
1600 x 1200
1680 x 1050
1920 x 1080
1920 x 1200
2048 x 1152
2048 x 1536
2560 x 1600

-------------------------------------------

Now, if your card should reveal higher resolutions, then most likely your GPU is not being used either. In that case, also go to your device manager and check if there are a lot of HID devices showing. Disable the ones you don't need, leaving only the essentials like keyboard and mouse. Then try running the game again.

-------------------------------------------

Official tech help suggests the following steps on the poor framerate issue:

Make sure that you meet the minimum system requirements.
Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.

Set your desktop to a resolution of 800x600, 32 bit True Color.
1) Right-click on your desktop and select Properties.
2) Click the Settings tab.
3) Set your screen area to 800x600.
4) Set the colors to 32 Bit (True Color). Under Windows NT this will be listed as 65554 colors.
5) Click Apply and OK.

For Windows XP
1) Right-click on your desktop and select Properties.
2) Click the Settings tab.
3) Set your screen area to 800x600.
4) Set the colors to Highest (32 bit).
5) Click Apply and OK.

For Windows Vista
1) Right-click on your desktop and select Personalize.
2) Click on Display Settings
3) Set the resolution slider to 800X600
4) Set the colors to Highest (32 bit).
5) Click Apply and OK.

---------------------------------------------------------
.
If you still have problems, then post below and attach your dxdiag.

Thank you.

what extension is allowed for dxdiag? txt seems to be blocked.

    anyway

    i have a core2duo 8400 @ 3.0 ghz  / 4 gb ddr2 ram / gtx 285 OCX / vista 64bit / latest 185 drivers from nvidia.

the game works extremely slow, even on lower resolutions. i have turned every service off, and no messenger no antivirus, and the game is almost unplayable . hurts my eyes.

i turned off AA and vsync, same issue.

it really feels bad because i checked different forums, and other people say the game is very well optimized for low end hardware. i was expecting to be able to play it with full details and AA on my config.

I believe it can also be a driver issue.  I have 2 PC's with almost identical specs and identical input devices.  On one PC (with the latest Nvidia 185.85 drivers)  The game plays like the problem described above.  On my other PC it plays at the max settings without a hitch.  The PC that plays well has older drivers (not sure which ones,I'm at work).  When I get home I will post what drivers are working good for this game.  Also, the PC that is playing bad has the game installed on a separate internal hard drive while the one playing good is on the C drive...

PC specs below for both pc's:
    Intel quad core q6700
    6gb ram
    Nvidia 8800gt
vista ultimate 64 both updated with latest directX and hotfixes

    For the system working good
Textures set to max, AAx2 vsync and shadows max

I can confirm that putting it on a second internal drive doesn't affect performance - mine's running fine on the G:\ drive (separate HDD, not a partition)...
hope that helps you solve the problem.

When I go into device manager there is no tab for HID... so i dont think this will help my problem...
I am currently running the game at LOW everything on the 800x600 resolution (bout the same fpw on the higher ones) at 10-13 FPS..

I am using a Dell xps m1530 laptop
    3.00 GB ram
    Intel 2 duo processor t700 @ 2.2 GHz
    Nvidia 8600 GT graphics card
    32 Bit vista (SP2)

Please tell me what is going on, every game i've thrown at this thing gets decent (40-50) FPW on med-high settings... Is my computer just not powerful enough or am I doing something wrong.

I have tried running it in DX9, my drivers are all up to date... anyone have a suggestion plz help

    Perfect!!!

Thanks for the great support! Removing some HID devices worked!

    Great,

disabling the HIDs solved the problem!
But be careful that you dont disabla your keyboard, mouse etc. just try and then disable the other HIDs.

    Now I can play on

    Q6600 @2,4GHZ
    8Gbyte RAM Corsair Dominator 1066
    Gigabyte X38 DS4
    ATI 3850
    Vista 64 Premium SP2
    XBox 360 Gamepad

Need to buy a new graphiccard, but I am waiting for the new Sapphire ones with 1k MHZ.

The Game ist running great now on my machine, without any low fps and the sound problem was solved too with disabling the HIDs.

I have a question, whats the problem with the HIDs - why do they slow down the game so freaky?

If you accidently disable your mouse, and can't enable it again, press the key on your keyboard that resembles a mouse cursor with a menu on it, right next to your right ctrl key. And then choose "enable" with the cursor keys.

Nothing in this thread worked for me. I have:

    Core2Duo E4500 @ 2.66GHz
    Nvidia 8800GT
    2 GB RAM
    Windows XP SP3

But I finally fixed the problem by rolling back Nvidias drivers. Their recent drivers don't seem to like Prototype.
