SONY STUDIOS 'BEGIN PLAYSTATION 4 PROJECTS'
But PS3, Vita and Move games will remain the major focus for years
Preliminary work on PlayStation 4 games has begun at several internal Sony studios, Develop understands.
A trusted source connected to the matter has told Develop that various game projects are at very early stages, though didn’t reveal which of Sony’s sixteen first-party studios had been delegated the work.
Few in the games business expect a new PlayStation to launch before 2014 – the next few Christmases will likely see Sony marketing software for PS3, Move and its new Vita handheld.
A Sony spokesperson has declined to comment.
The discovery comes as rival platform holder Microsoft continues work on its next-generation system. Develop has published data from various sources that points to a Christmas 2013 release for the so-called ‘Xbox Next’.
It is a company convention at Sony to remain constantly engaged in R&D work on future platforms – in fact PS Vita development began soon after the release of the PSP in 2005. But Develop has been told that several SCE studios now have teams working on PS4 game concepts that could jump into full production if given the green light.
Many developers believe PlayStation 3, which first launched five years ago and has gone on to sell more than fifty million units, remains a high-end machine.
In a new interview with Develop, Epic president Mike Capps said it would be a “very tall order” to build commercial hardware that is a generational leap forward.
“I mean, PS3 is still very bad-ass,” he said.
What is clear is that Sony is some distance from finalising the technology behind its next generation console, and any early input from internal game studios will be a relief to the development industry.
Last year, Worldwide Studios (WWS) boss Shuhei Yoshida said Sony has learnt from past mistakes and is now asking game developers to help shape future technology.
“We wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware,” he told Develop.
In February, SCE chairman Kaz Hirai said Sony was “not deliberating on PS4”.
The company has built a strategy to support consoles with new games for about ten years, and the experienced executive pointed out that PS3 has not even reached its fifth year yet.
In May, Sony's chief financial officer Masaru Kato explained to investors that "future platform" development work has caused a spike in R&D costs.

can't see this being around till 2016 ![]()
Considering the time it takes to develop for new next-gen consoles I wouldn't be surprised if that guess isn't too far off the mark.
I am only guessing, but Sony have said that the PS3 is a ten year plan, so 2015 or 16 for the PS3 would be my guess, MS most likely will do the same, why make a new console when your current one is doing the business
Well the reason for it is because console life spans are expected to last 7 years but support for the console itself will last 10 years. 7 years is actually a long time for a console to stay on it's own until it hits it's limits and is expecting to be replaced by a superior version of itself (ex- PS, PS2, PS3 and Xbox, Xbox 360).
PS1 is still around ![]()
No. What meant was that even when a new console comes out, they show support for the previous console for about 2-3 years before they let it go (No more support, No more games).
Sadly, technology develops very quickly now and their strategy may not work like it did for the PS1 and PS2. I do hope that whatever the Xbox puts out is not enough to overshadow the PS3 or something good enough to change Sony's plans.
Well, as long as Sony keeps the same controller and quality, it is a buy for me.
Best not be until like 2015. I want to enjoy my PS3 and not have to waste like $600 to keep up with technology. That person is right saying that the PS3 is a generation ahead because it's a true fact, why waste money on making some new when the stuff you have now is amazingly growing fast. Better games are finally sparking on the platform and things are looking good. It'll be a bad mistake.
The only reason I would like a new generation of consoles to be released is for a leap in visuals and multiplayer gaming capabilities.

Don't get me wrong... I'm completely happy with the current-gen but I definitely wouldn't mind being given the opportunity for more players in a match (BF3) or even better visuals (Crysis).
Same here. The only reason I don't want it now is because developers are just now getting the hang of the PS3 and the "easier to develop on PS3" is nothing to fall back on because there is no excuse for it. Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog handle the PS3 just fine.
The new generation just needs to be above PC's current state to last longer.
They handle it just fine because they make games EXCLUSIVELY for the PS3. Just look at Uncharted 3, game looks amazing and it's a PS3 exclusive. All PS3 exclusives look very nice, when multiplatformed games come to the PS3, they're not as buffed up as they could be.
