Spectator without being kicked / using a game slot ?

In multiplayer I sometimes want to see how a well-performing player plays. Is it possible to forfeit my spot in the game and go into "Spectator" mode ?

 

I've noticed that if you join a game that's already in progress then you go into spectator mode by default - however that's really unfair to the team since I'm not participating (and hence get kicked).

    You can do it after the match in Theater mode.  You can move the camera around freely or see the first-person perspective of anyone in the match.
