Rank reset back to rank at start of double xp

Basically after playing the last bit of the double xp today i got a message saying a playlist update available go back to main menu etc. So i dashboarded so the playlist could update and my rank went down from prestige 8 level 21 to presitge 7 level 50, which it was at the start of playing today. Is this becuase i failed to update the playlist correctly or played beyond the allowed time? If it is then fair enough. Thanks.
