Is League matchmaking actually taking into account players skill level?

Posted by BasilOfBakerStreet on Nov 22, 2012 5:07 PM

I am wondering if the league system actually works.  I am an average gamer, I do not play all the time, but whenever I do play I get owned.  The matchmaking system matches me with players that are definately better than me by orders.  I am wondering if the system actually takes into account the fact that I am getting destroyed on a regular basis.  It seems I am always outclassed, and I know I am not the only gamer who is like this, so why can't I be matched up with people more my skill and speed level?

Ive played quite a bit of league play and think I can offer some insight here.

After my placement games, I was put into the silver division. Ive got promoted twice since then. The key thing here though is that in all 3 divisions Ive played in, Ive routinely played against better and worse players. Not every game will identical skill levels across the board everytime.

This is partly because of the relatively small numbers in the playlist and the actual requirement of league play to actually test/compare you to supposedly better players in order to see if you should be promoted. However, what I have noticed that many games have teams overall, that are roughly balanced. So its very possible for league play to be functioning properly and for you to be having problems with different opponents.

If this isnt the case, I assume you are losing a lot? If so, you should find yourself going down a division or more which will in turn reduce the level of competition. However, if whatever team you're on is grinding out wins roughly 50% of the time (regardless of how you do personally) then you'll find the same continuing. Remember, it is competitive and isnt meant to be easy. I could be more definitive if I knew how your wins/losses are going though.

League play doesn't work because there aren't enough people playing it to have a wide range of skills. They should have went all the way an integrated it into the rank up playlists where all the people are.

its not based off of "skill" its based off your win loss ratio

To be fair to him, the win or loss is derived from skill though but I take your point all the same.

      Basil,

It sounds like you may have played a relatively few amount of games for it to "kick in" properly. The 5 placement games is a very low sample size for Treyarch to measure your ability but we all have to acknowledge that they have to get the ball rolling.

If thats not the case and youve played 50+ games in total on league play then something of the following is happening:

      1) You're regularly playing in a party that have players better then you

      2) You're having incredibly good fortune with your random team mates (this is unlikley over say 50 games though.)

      3) You're adding more of a contribution to a teams win they you currently believe so.

Its very possible a combination of these are happening too but dont overlook number 3. Its very possible for a "better player" to out perform you in a particular battle but only in detriment to his own teams chances of winning (less value kill, messing up a spawn, ignoring objective, disregarding more pressing things to do etc.)

Its entirely possible (although not necessarily desirable) in some circumstances to go 17-24 and be more of an asset to your team then the opposition player who goes 31-14 is for his own team. From the sounds of it, for whatever reason, what cant be denied from the looks of it is.... you're winning games more often then losing. Just need to figure out why.

Although its difficult to get your head round it by the way, right now, you are definitely improving. Playing against better players is the best way to do this and from the sounds of it, this is what you're doing. If you want to get better, keep playing.
