united states terminologyy

i don't like how people from the united states say that they are from america. there are two whole continents named america with many countries on them. but they don't call themselves american. does the united states think they own the term "american"? :/

    I don't like how people from the east coast ask me if I live in Washington DC when I say I live in Washington.

    It comes from The United States of America. The term American is correct.
