Lag Compensation?

Posted by ACII on Jul 27, 2012 6:26 PM

Will it be back?

It killed BLOPS and MW3 for me, although MW3 was much much much worse with it.  I even enjoyed playing BLOPS, just hated the lag comp.  MW2 was full of hacks and cheats, but it played smooth as butter as far as lag and hit detections goes.

So is there any official word on this?  any good speculation?

Thanks!

No official word, but we'll see what happens. I never had a problem with Black Ops, personally, MW3 its been pretty blatant.

There will always be lag, its just the nature of the beast in Online gaming... but its key as to how the Devs deal with it.

I agree. Something needs to be done about the terrible lag.

You do realize that every online game has some sort of lag compensation system built into it, right?

That isn't what the OP is talking about. Of course, every [modern] online game has some form of lag compensation. Older PC games didn't and there were all kinds of problems.

The OP is talking about this whole concept of balancing players connections versus each other. It's an "artificial" lag and it first started in Black Ops. MW3 went way overboard and added another this whole viz interpolation mess, which turned out even worse than BO.

MW2, WaW, and CoD4 had the lag compensation in terms of player A sends a timestamp when they fired and player B sends a timestamp when they fired and the host weighs out who really did what when. All of that is fine and good and neccessary. However, hampering connections in an attempt to be "fair" to players with yellow/red bars is an endless frustration that should not return to another CoD title.

I found BO pretty average lag wise up to Jan 11. They completed a final lag comp tweak and it worked OK for me. By that I mean lag, while always present was managable and did not detract from my enjoyment of the game. I hit max prestige on BO Aug 11 and then played mw2 to get the token for mw3.

Again lag on mw2 was present but managable. I played mw2 up to mw3 release. And got mw3 on day of release.

Connectivity on mw3 has been hell from day one right up to today. Lag performance is highly variable from extreme unplayable lag to managable.

I am hoping that BO2 has the connectivity performance and lag levels as a min that BO delivered from Feb 11.

In 3arc we trust, in 3arc we trust, .......hopefully

    There will be lag compensation.

Until the net runs <20ms to anywehre in the world... it will be there.

No one really knows the answer to your question as there has been zero from the devs on lag compensation......or connectivity, matchmaking, spawn logic for that matter.

it is a worry maybe they dont know the answer till the game goes live , then the adjustments begin.
