I have comcast. (I am in northern utah) and also seem to draw host more than I would like. Sometimes it does not affect me...other times it affects me to much. With that said, I think is has more to do with who is connecting to you while you host. If even one person in the lobby has an inferior connection for whatever reason, it is going to drag you down with him. Not to mention you are communicating with 11 other gamers, (17 if in ground war) while they are only talking to one.

@jwaller, when you say drag me down with him, it basically levels out everybody right?

That's the theory yes. The theory behind lag comp is to try and put everyone on a level playing field so that no one has the upper hand persay. There is a thread on here from earlier today that explains a lot about lag comp. If I find it I will post it here for you.

Don't confuse your down/upload speed with why you're being given host. You're given host because of your low ping rate - basically the time it takes for your modem to respond to information sent to it...
During a host migration, a ping test is done on everyone to determine whos modem responds the quickest and that guy is given host - it's basically determining who it thinks can process all the movements in game without disruption or lag. Of course what this does THEN, is (and this is why hosts regularly back out) your modem has now up 23 other players (depending on what game type you're playing) commands and your own to process, which basically lags the host like hell to the point where what the host sees and what actually happens results in the host being shot around corners etc...
and this is the basis for all lag compensation, its your ping rate, not your down/upload speed

This makes sense. Don't recall if I have seen anyone explain it this way though. Where do you get 23 players though? The max for online that I have ever seen is 18 in ground war.

Ok, I am always the host, so that means my connection is better than the other people in the lobby? Also that means I am likely to be a victim to Lag compensation? I have an Ipod, Iphone 4, Desktop, Laptop, cablebox and TV running off my router/Internet. I am with TKS internet company in Germany and they use Arris routers, my max internet speed is 6Mbps, when I test through internet speed I always get 5.5 ish. My internet speed suppose to increase this friday to 16Mbps so damn, I am lost on my own post,,,,,,,. So basically I guess my question is lag comp is normally my enemy because of a good connection at the time. I always have 4 bars and I dont know much about all this internet mess. I thought you are suppose to just pop the game in and play. I am in the army and I swear playing this game and making sure you have the things necessary to succeed compares to that going out on missions at night in Afghanistan lol. Got your nods, check, got your 10 mags, check, got your first aid, check, got radio frequencies, check lol
well your chosen correct answer isnt even correct..
first off host is decided by upload bandwidth (its not speed) along with how everyone else in the lobby pings to you, when you enter a lobby everyone whose upload bandwidth is over a soecific amount is considered as a host, the game also checks which player the has the most players able to ping to them the lowest,,, and thats basically how a host is selcted. (theres a few more conditions but these arent needed for this post)
if you are host the problem is basically IW screwed hosts by applying too much of a disadvantage (using a term everyone else understands) nothing to do with having the best internet or connection.

Hey Macc, I've been reading most of the 800 pages of the Updates and Fixes thread where you talk back and forth with ghandi. It's obvious you understand this stuff better than most of us on this forum. But in regards to slowing down or adding "lag" to the faster connecting players, wouldn't it just be a matter of dialing down the lag they're giving to them? Unless of course there's something much bigger that's wrong and IW doesn't want to admit to it.

Remember though when getting faster internet. SPEED is not really what you have to look at in console play.
Console play is based on mostly PING and BANDWIDTH.
You also dont really have "faster internet" you have larger packet sizes.
Look up posts by Maccabi and trust me he will help you understand how it works.
The basic way to put it is Xbox Live really only uses under 2 up and 5 down when playing a game.

You all are some true Gs, thanks for the input, all of it was helpful. Macc quick question though, what do you think I will expect once my internet bandwith improve would that mean a better ping or should it be a better ping.

I know you posted this to Mac but the major things that helped me are below......
You ping could still be good as long as your connection is "cleaner". Usually the connection "speed" may not make a difference.
For example if you must play wireless than switch your router to use a higher channel.
As well as go to your Xbox and set it to look at 8.8.8.8 as the primary and 4.4.4.4 as the secondary ( I THINK those numbers are correct. look for Macs Elagphant thread to get those re-checked as well as more detailed info. I am forgetful today due to 110 degree days out here
)It helped out my matchmaking a LOT.

I live in Germany as well nad we have been upgraded to 32MBPS, but that means crap when upload is still 1MBPS. Another thing that messes up the whole "host" thing is the fact that the "host" is the aveage of all of the gamers in the lobby. Also, we are playing on outdated MW2 servers (on PS3 anyway) and dedicated servers won't work eaither. Lag comp has always been in multiplayer games and no one knew about until IW decided to let everyone know. I had Kabel Deutchland before I moved on base and my d/l was 25MBPS and upload was 10MBPS. It was awesome. I could upoload YT videos in 15 minutes, now it takes me an hour.
Oh, if you haven't noticed already, our IP is located in the UK. Makes no sense to me why we have a German owned company/cable lines and the IP is in the UK. It should be Frankfurt like the rest of Kabel Deutchland.
