Really COD? Again?

Posted by bombom53 on May 7, 2012 3:14 PM

I am a long time Call Of Duty fan, have been since the beginning. I have owned every COD ever made, and prided myself on my collection. When I heard people dissing the game, or talking about how Battlefield was better, I would always come to COD's defense. When I heard the new addition to this fantastic series was being released, I was genuine thrilled. It was all I talked about for days. Then the trailer came.I watched that clock count down... Getting closer... And closer... And finally, it hit 0. Then my Dreams were shattered. 5 seconds into the trailer and my mind was blown; not because it was awesome, but because for the 6th year in a row, Call of Duty was using the same graphics engine. It seems silly to me that a game as praised and anticipated as COD was using 6 year old graphics, when games like Battlefield 3 are using realist 3D engines designed for maximum realism. If COD continues down this path...well...I'm afraid it may become obsolete. These are just the thoughts of a single man, let me know what you think about this subject as well. Thanks.

    It takes a year or so to build a new game engine from the ground up or a large chunk of money to borrow someone else's. Activision wants to release a Call of Duty title every year so creating a new engine is out of the question nor do they want to spend money to fix something that is not broken.

    Graphics aren't everything either. When it comes down to it, gameplay is the main factor. If a game had superb graphics and terrible gameplay, no one would want to play the game very long.

        See, that sounds a lot like a personal issue that you're going to have to resolve on your own.  I've played all those CoD's as well, and every time I play a new one, and start feeling the various changes and renovations to the game, I feel like I'm playing a new one.

        And while you seem to be a very pro-graphics guy, I'm going to have to disagree with you completely.  The first step to a revolutionary game is absolutel not revolutionary graphics.....which is closer to the last step.  It's revolutionary gameplay.  Bad graphics can be overcome by excellent game mechanics.  The opposite is absolutely not true.

            I disagree, and so do a lot of gamers. Proof is in the pudding, Call of Duty sells more than Battlefield. More people play it, and most have them have probably at least tried Battlefield. We still prefer CoD, are the graphics worse? Yes. Do we really care? Nope.

    I always preferred game play over graphics, as long as the game has new game play (in which I can trust treyarch to do so) then graphics aren't so much of a big deal but hey if graphics are your thing then Call of Duty is not for you.

    Yeah, I wouldn't mind if they were using an unmodified version of the CoD4 engine. As it stands now the engine has been highly modified. Don't get me wrong, I don't want N64 graphics but as long as it is as good as CoD4 I'm good on graphics. Beyond that it's all about the gameplay. Which some people say sounds cliche, but it's true as hell.

    The reason bf3 can run those better graphics is because it doesn't run 60fps. They made their choice, cod made theirs and higher fps is the better way to go with a fast game like cod when u still have graphics that are acceptable. New consoles will fix this having to make the choices and trade offs, but there not here yet so... In spite of the 60fps though, they actually did make some improvements that will be noticeable. Don't feel like linking the article for u though. If u care u can google it.

    I think you're the neediest kid.

    Graphics =/= good game

    Homefront took almost all my attention from COD for a while, and that game had lower quality graphics than COD.

      I think it's safe to assume that Activision is waiting to invest in a new Call of Duty engine unltil the next generation consoles are realesed. Which could very likely be in time for the next Infinity Ward installment.
