Was the future a good move?

Posted by banaNOVA on May 3, 2012 10:05 PM

oke so we all know the game will be at 2025 for a huge part, and i think it's really good to do something nobody expected.  if they made another cold war game they probaly would use some of the guns from black ops and everybody will like it, but when it is released for a month it's like 'hmmm i played this game before' just like MW3 i just stepped to BF3 for this year... they same would happen if they would make a waw2. so treyarch was like ' we need to do something that's never done before' so they went to the 'futur' and i think it's a good move. and i don't get why they compare halo to this... i mean that not every fps SCI-FI is halo, you also can state that like every fps is a ripoff from DOOM (don't know what the first fps's where). so please be happy we get something diffrent!

The way I percieved it was the main characters VIEWPOINT was in 2025 but what he remembered what happened 10 to 20 years before 2025. Hence now.

Vietnam would have been good . another WW2 would have been good. anything BEFORE WW2 would have been a waste of time.

All the time periods pretty much are used up in the past 50 years. So YES I think it was a great idea to stretch out to there. And also an unexpected turn into time. I think right after the last Black Ops would have been a bad move.

and the idea of the enemy stealing our "keys to the car" was actually an impressive move.

I think it was a good idea.. i think they did good by not going too into the future.. 2025, really isnt that far.. but that does leave windows open for them to do something kool and neat without it being unrealistic.

Amazon Women on the Moon quote

"This year of 1980 will be remembered as the day man landed on the moon"

    Now THAT was realistic

Why remember that when man landed on the moon 11 years before 1980?

Apparently you never saw the movie. It was a parody made to look like a 60s movie where we landed on the moon in the 80s to dispel myths that it was made of green cheese.

Thats the basis of the joke. Like when the original Star Trek predicted that NOW we would be ruled by Khan Sing after the nuclear wars.

Yup, i mean Black Ops was put in the past so it was good to have Black Operations in the far future. Its all about the elite saving the world so i expect big things, also from zombies, if they took it to the moon then they are taking it further now.

Thanks for showing you care about Black Ops 2 in a positive way. I personally think the future idea will be unique, instead of making the entire game futuristic they just put new machines and stuff. The guns are still modern guns, the M16, the MP7, they look the same as they do today, just with different statistics and stuff, probably not that different at all.

I hope all this is true. I was afraid that they were going to make up guns and throw it in the game. I'm not talking about lasers and crap or anything like that. But I just don't want to be using make believe guns honestly.. is the game placed in 2025 or is Woods speaking about a past occurence?

I would have prefered it was not in the future, I'd like another 2nd WW game myself, the future idea will ruin this game as it gives the dev's unlimited power to make things up like guns, killstreaks etc.

In fact the only good news is that Treyarch are making it, if IW was this game would be a write off.

Look at it from 3arc's perspective guys. Going into the future will allow more freedom to make things to use in multiplayer. SOme things they just couldn't justify in Black Ops.

Maybe we will have an M16A10 or something cool and just eviscerate foes!

Black Ops 2 is set in the near future - 2025 isn't that far away you realise - and also in the past.

There are only so many times you can set a fps in WW II.

Ghosty, I would love another WW2 game, provided they don't do another textbook campaign run again. Perhaps one that has a German campaign? IMO, the Germans are more interesting. People love playing the losing side in Vietnam games *cough*, and I would personally love to try my best  to hold Berlin. It could play similar to Halo Reach's campaign, which was epic.

Sniper Elite V2 might be worth a look then.

Sniper Elite V2 is a good example of a WW2 game that tries to be different, and I am actually interested in it.

    1. 2025 is by no means sci fi, people comparing it to Halo and things like that are just stupid, it'll basically be Modern warfare except with more robots and flashing lights and technology basically. But no aliens, or any crap like that which pretty much makes a sci fi.

    2. My opinion? It was last resort, they've done past, IW stole the present, Treyarch had no where else to go but the future. Now they have, COD is pretty much done for, unless they want to give Civil war a go or something like that, the best Era's for shooters will be gone after this so COD games will just be continuations from the last. COD surely must be coming to an end soon, I would hope.

your right.i dont know why they keep comparing it to halo.thats just dumb.call of duty is a miltary epic story that spans timelines.if they want to similarize it with a game they should think of ghost recon or even terminator.actually elements of deus ex games are in this too.black ops 2 will probably the best call of duty!

not sure... i really would like to have seen this pick up where BLOPS left off and enter the "Cold War" and hit on a lot of the other "Black Ops" missions that took place over the last 30 yrs.  to me it would've been a great follow up to the saga.  then maybe in their 3rd installment make it more futuristic, so that it solidifies the meaning of "BLACK OPS" and the operators that carry out those Clandestine missions..  i can't see any reason why they would go back to the WW2 era...i mean, that would not relate to woods or mason.  and this whole "The Future is Black" theme, to me does not go hand in hand...at this point.  will be easier to make a more thorough judement once more information is released.

It was time for 3arc to break the mold. All of their COD games have been pre-modern. COD needs a new path, something to break the mold. They made a smart move going with the not distance future. As those have mentioned they can use modern day weapons but can also use some imagination and come up with fictional stuff.

Other than that all i can say is I'm many times more excited about this game then i ever was over MW3.

Because MW3 was pretty much a copy paste MW2 with some tweaks here and there. Tho the developers who got thrown into it did the best job they could given the situation, the game just failed to bring anything new to the table.

Apparently there are two timelines in BLOPS 2.  There are some missions that are in the first cold war era that give the player the backdrop of "why" things happen that lead up to the second timeline, which is in the future.  If this is true, it certainly gives 3arc a wide range of options with weapons, killstreaks, and map variations in both timelines of the past, and future.  Sounds awesome.

It was an interesting move I think. I'm just glad they didn't go too far into the future or use too much Sci-Fi. I'm not sure how I'd feel if Call of Duty became a space shooter

Agree at first when i heard we were going futuristic and saw screen shots of the walking tank and player looking like a halo character i wasnt so keen, but after i watched the trailer a few times and saw interviews and screen shots of MP its clear that this will be a more vibrant setting with a touch more tech than MW3 but other than that it will stay the same. I would like to see another cold war, gulf war setting but i dont want to see a COD that goes beyond 2025 or into space or even back to WW2

Yes no more WW2 please. And i would like to see some Desert Storm or something but i dont know if they really want to do that seeing as some people are still sore about it.

Hell yeah! The future is where its at! ww2 is over, vietnam is over,There will be another cold war,its inevitable. This was a smart move for the call of duty realm. The weaspons, tactics, and environment of Black ops 2 is fun and exciting.dont you want to know what technology has in store for us?This franchise can only get better with this game.

I also like that the COD franchise took a small jump into the future. I don't want this turning into a ray gun war, but I do like the whole future scenario.

the future scenario is accurate as hell becuase the weapons we will use in the game are actual prototype weapons they use in the miltary right now.as far as ray guns thats fiction.projectile bullets will always be around.robotics and lasers are real.call of duty is a legendary franchise.the games keep getting better and better.

Actually I saw a video of an interview with a treyarch developer. 1/3 of the campaign will take place in the 1980s with mason woods and hudson ( im assuming it will show the soviets invasion of afghanistan considering there being horses in the trailer. and woods survival). The rest of the campaign however will be in 2025 and u play as David Mason , Alex masons son. In my opinion they couldve done alot more besides the future.

without a doubt the best idea they had. the past n present has gotten crusty n boring. this was the perfect idea. btw ppl saying it's si-fi is a load of crap considering most of that technology already exists. but yes this was the best idea they've had, personally i dont care whether its good or not. the fact that their giving new ideas a go means that their listening and responding well

I think that they could have stayed in the past for one more CoD, but besides that, I think it was a good decision. People are always saying how CoD is the same game, just in a different package. No one can say that Black Ops 2 will be like the other CoDs that much. I am really pumped to see what they do with future weapons and vehicles. Can't wait to see some more trailers!

Black Ops was the most interesting single-player CoD campaign I've played.

Black Ops 2 is written by the same team.

I think the near future is the perfect setting for CoD, a mixture of the possible and probable.

People say that the ERA of FPS is coming to an end, you forget that they've based the game on real life events, they can still come up with their own creative warfare or something similar, Just because its CoD doesn't mean it has to be based off real life!
