It is a risk, but a risk that is needed.  With sales down compared to Black Ops and Battlefield 3 doing well, they need to take a risk or CoD could fall from it's throne.

Will it pay off?  That has yet to be seen.  But if it does, it could rival CoD 4.

No, I don't think so. The future is the future of CoD gaming. It's a breathe of fresh air and it looks fantastic.

Is a risk, MW3 started it and failed with it. BO2 is doing REAL future and I think it will be incredible.

The campaign can be as far fetched as it likes as long as the multiplayer is still the same .

Treyarch knew what they were doing. This step is like this.

    WW2 > Modern times

    Modern Times > Future

I think it is a big risk but be honest, wont you buy the game just to see and because its call of duty and even if this game sucks wont you still go and buy the next installment next year. They are likely relying on franchise loyalty.

There's always a risk when you change the formula that made you successful. But at the same time, change is sometimes necessary if you want to move forward. Though the trailer didn't get me really excited about the new release, I'm still open to warfare in the near future.

13 years ahead, I'd say just right, and to be honest, they aren't too far from the real future you guys might think.

I for one am looking forward to this game. However Call of Duty is getting too much ahead of itself, and too fast.

One thing I have always been a little critical of was how inconsistent the franchise is. This is why the brand is generally seen as a money maker.

I reckon this should be the last Call of Duty, and group this title and the ones previous something like 'prior' call of duty.

Then a brand new game should be developed called 'Call of Duty' as a rebirth. And the brand should be made only by one developer, and a new game should NOT come out yearly. Lets say Call of Duty is a modern shooter and big dlc drops including story extensions is added yearly. The smaller DLC is free for Elite users but the bigger ones are only cut in price slightly for elite users. This is my opinion on how Call of Duty should be marketed now anyway.

i would have to say no and yes lol.

No only because it would eventually have to go there lol.

Its time for them to move on and i think people were thinking

its way to advanced and its not going to be.

Yes its a risk, your always gonna have these haters, trolls and critics they're never going away lol.

So i am actually happy that they're pushing the boundries for cod myself.

enough is enough and it's time for a change lol.

SO WHY WAIT? Why Not Now?

      =========================

i guess some of you really weren't paying attention to the detail and hidden easter eggs in hangar 18 lol.

and moon was a hint in itself lol. These both were hinting at a futuristic cod from treyarch.

i some what knew that there would be a sequel to black ops lol.

its true i wasn't a big fan for blops period but mw3 some what ruined it for me, i hope

this won't ruin cod for good for me lol so yeah i am alittle bit skeptical about this myself lol.

i haven't felt like a cod fan since W.A.W And MW2 lol. That is bad.

They want to make a sci-fi game.

So they take Call of Duty -- which is fine.
But then they take Black Ops which was a cold-war game last round, and put it in the future.

        ...

        I like consistency and honesty.

If I were in charge, I'd make three or four separate brands:

        World at War: WW2
Black Ops: More special-operations targeted (Rainbow Six)
        Modern Warfare: Soliders in war

A new brand entirely: Set in the future

I think its more of a risk to not take it into the future.. MW3 asked for more money for more of the same and continues to.. we desurve something different! what would you consider playing it safe? another WW2 game? Dont be silly...

I've been hoping they would take CoD into a near future setting, but I was surprised to see it happen with Black Ops.  The title "Black Ops" doesn't suggest futuristic warfare, but I do believe it's a needed breath of fresh air.  Thing is, they're running out of options on directions they can take the franchise in.  Honestly, I think it would be beneficial to release a new title once every 2 years rather than every year, but money talks.  When every release becomes the greatest selling game of all time and you're raking in that kind of cash, it's hard to back away from the formula that's been so successful.

I'm pretty confident we're on the verge of the next generation consoles and I would love to see the next CoD title be a reboot of the franchise, so to speak, and released on the new consoles whenever they hit the market.  I believe the reboot idea was suggested above, and I'm in favor of it.

All in all, I enjoyed the online multi-player of Black Ops more than any other CoD title and I'm really looking forward to the new release.

New material is desperately needed...   I still think using a horse in 2025 is odd.

Actually the 'horse' part is in Afghanastan in the 80's. Black Ops 2 is not just set in 2025 but has missions set in the 80's too - this is part of the background story about the 'villain'

Horses are an integral part to warfare in Afghanastan in this era and if the enmies are controlling mechs then they could also play a part in 2025 (If vehicles are compromised - then Horses may be an alternative option)

Taking the CoD franchise to the future is suicidal at best. What most CoD fans yearned for was a Cod4 "remake" like game. Hence, why it's considered the best in the series. COD4 is what put the COD series on the map and made the franchise what it is today. What I don't get is, why would Treyarch break away from a already proven successful model?

As a gamer, what I hate most is when a studio makes changes to a game beyond recognition. I think BO2 will fall in that Socom,Halo,Graw territory for me.

I didn't like it at all.  Just my opinion.  Every other cod trailer has got me excited for launch.  This just confused and angered me.  Like someone said this looks like Halo s**t and I ***king hate halo.  This story is gonna be terrible, that  is my prediction.

      Couldn't agree more.

The community has called MW3 a fail and that it hasn't pushed COD boundaries so they do something about it and you moan.

      Idiots.

I don't think it's a gamble. It's more like a needed change and an evolution. They realized that people loves Modern Warfare and 13 years in the future isn't that far off. I may be wrong but didn't the MW series took place at around 2016? I see BO2 as a much needed revitalization and I'm sure it will break MW3's records.

They will lose fans, and they will gain more fans.

I am one of the fans they will lose.

But I know that they are very likely to gain more fans than they lose, so it's likely a smart decision.

I'm a fan of consistency myself.

Call of Duty: World at War: WW2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Current events

I think that / would prefer that Black Ops would be a Korea, Vietnam, Gulf and Cold War game series.

    WaW: WW2
    BO: Between WW2 and 9/11
    MW: Current wars

A new series not trying to sell games on the Black Ops title like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare sold on the Call of Duty name.

    ...
This time around, the title sounds even more wrong.
Black Ops a more or less public operation against a known enemy?

    Sorry.

Believe it or not, Modern Warfare 3 was based in these times, the only problem with IW is that they thought it'd be exactly the same as today. Treyarch creatively got professional help to see what it'd be like in 2025, their information was accurate, you must not judge until there is a gameplay trailer/multiplayer trailer, we have only seen the reveal trailer!

13 years is a very long time in terms of tecnological advancement, take your cell phone for example and think back 13 years as to what those phones were capable of...you see how far we've come.

"The future is not as far off as most people think...we're not ready for it."
