Ways to determine if a clan is trustworthy:
Get the clan name, go to the elite site on the computer and check it out.
1. check the clan feed, if it is available. It may not be because elite has added a privacy option to block the clan feed. Usually if a clan has kicked people out they will post on the feed about being kicked out. A large clan with one or two of the statements is not suspect, but if they have a lot of them I would beware. Also, you can see if anyone in the clan responded to them and what they said.
2. compare the level with the number of members. Be suspicious of a clan with a high level and low member count. A level 10 clan would have to have about 12 Founder members or have participated and earned points in clan ops in order to be level 12. Here is a good thread about points per level, http://community.callofduty.com/thread/200404987 and you should be able to see if they've competed in ops and how many points they earned on the clan page.
4. If you can, check a few of the members to see how active they are and if there are any signs of cheating, boosting or glitching. For example, you probably don't want to join a clan in which some of the members have 100 days of dxp.
3. Check these forums to see if anyone's posted anything about the clan. If you just find one or two negative posts, there may not be a problem. Use common sense and decide based on the tone of the post and what the poster says. There may even be a response from someone in the clan.
You can always ask to play in a few games with the clan. Listen to how they communicate with one another and with other people. People tend to let their guard down in the heat of the game, especially after a few of them. After doing that, ask yourself if these are the people you'd like to play with.
Being in a clan can be a lot of fun, even without the clan ops. This is the first game I've really played in a party and I like it so much better than playing alone. The teamwork and having someone watch your back, and getting to know different people has made this game a lot of fun for me, even with all the issues (lag, matchmaking, etc.)
