SMG VS ASSAULT RIFLE Which is King in MW3? + Aggressive MOAB - Prepare For Glory!

SMG vs Assault Rifle which is King? Been talking with many different people on the subject of which gun class reigns supreme overall. Most believe due to most of the map layouts being more tight/condense that the smg's have the clear advantage on most maps. What's your opinion?
Happy Holidays Everybody, enjoy ![]()

It depends on the map really. All I use is ar. To me ars will always be the best weapon set to use. I think overall the ars are better though. Just because no matter what map you are on they can be used and be effective. I feel that smgs are really only good on smaller maps. I personally use the MK14 which can pick someone off from across the map. It sucks at close range but at medium-long range it outclasses IMO most weapons including some sniper rifes. But if you take a weapon like the acr which is effective at all ranges becasue of the little recoil it is way more effective than the smgs. And since it seems that most of the time when you engage an enemy its either at medium or long range I just dont see how you can be effective with an smg.
Well said and good points, even though I enjoy the faster movement of an smg overall the Assault just has slightly more versatility to cover more engagements at different ranges which for me gives it the edge in general combat. As you mentioned guns like the ACR are great all around due to low recoil and if you slap steady aim pro it helps the CQB situations even more. Although using smg's on larger maps can be effective in some cases (rare) with precise route running.
I played with SMGs for a while until I unlocked a decent AR and then I stuck with that. I've found the ARs easier to use by and large (though with 'range' attached, SMGs can be pretty lethal). Generally when I get bored with one I just switch. They're both much of a muchness in my opinion.
Yes adding Range to SMG's helps immensly for those medium engagements. For me the M4A1 is a pretty decent AR starter, actually might be the best gun you get at the beginning IMO. Which AR do you usually unlock at the beginning and stick with? For me it's usually the SCAR if I don't just stick with the M4A1.
I think its map dependant and also playstyle dependant . I use extreme cond. On all classes and play aggressive rushing and flanking so smgs are king for me but on village, fallen and sometimes interchange I use an acr and on search when I'm on defense I always use a.r's ( please ppl when your on defense its not always smart for all 6 to rush right away. Just a pet hate with randoms) . The acr is great all round but in close quarter's ill have a pp90 over anything
Love using extreme conditioning on my Kill Confirmed setup with specialist and SOH as my first package perk, only certain guns I find can be used without SOH otherwise it's kind of counter productive due to long reload time when pushing into the enemy spawn.
Depends on the map. On maps with lots of med-sized combat like Arkaden, Village or Lockdown an assault rifle is good, while on smaller maps or maps with a lot of CQC like Seatown or Hardhat use a SMG.
But I'm the kind of guy who likes using every weapon class in the game. On larger, more open maps like Downturn or Interchange I find a good LMG to be good, while on maps with lots of hiding places (i.e. Fallen or Bakaara) use a sniper. Then, I pull out a AA-12 or Striker on Dome and sometimes Hardhat.
I play a lot of domination, so I'm not always running and gunning as you need to stop and recover objectives. I find most of the time in this situation that a SMG just doesn't cover the range I need when Capping a flag. Most of the time I use a MK14 for the range and the ammo conservation. I also think the Type95 is a solid choice over many SMG's for it's added range and stopping power. Of course both of these guns require a more accurate aim as they don't lend themselves well to the, "spray and pray" method of shooting. This means that in an up close battle SMG's usually come out on top. To combat this I carry a Skorpion as a secondary weapon, so that I can have some flexability.
MK14 is a powerful gun, I've been using Kick/red dot+ scav but I'm sure there are better combo's to maximize that gun's ability. What proficiency/attachment's do you use with it?
What proficiency/attachment do you use on your AA-12? Right now I'm working my way up to damage and extended mags.
i agree with u all the way on the best smgs and i use range on all of those haha, best AR's for me are MK14, ACR, and M4 carbine
Yeah range helps immensly, and those 3 AR's are effective in most situations.
What do you run on your M4?
Ars are still the easiest class to use, especially with so many headglitch spots, that extra range and less recoil helps a lot.
My favored smg is the pp90 silenced or with rf (overkill, but a lot of fun run-n-gunning), favored attachment is range, so I can burst fire mid range and hope to beat ars while pwning them cqb generally. Cheapest smg is the mp7 since it has nearly no recoil while dealing 20 damage long range, it's a hybrid smg / ar, very cheap to use imo.
Got to say Impressive moab Run-n-Gunning. Not even dropshotting, one on one. That would have made it better to watch though imo, just for the extra pwn effect.
Yeah the MP7 is insane, even with silencer it has amazing damage at medium range and as you mentioned nearly no recoil.
With the small spaced maps SMG's really are kings in MW3. If you try to rush hard with an assault rifle the hip fire from SMGS will just get you pwn'd. Tho assault rifles still are great for a more cautious approach. Picking spots on the maps where i'll always try to be medium to long range and such.
Look kiddies he managed to get a MOAB while actually picking up tags, should take notes.
Yeah I agree you have to play a much more defensive/post up style to keep the majority of your engagements at medium to long range when using AR's to maximize it's advantage.
Very nice. Im getting sick of domination moabs. Boring.
Pp90 is king to me silenced w range. But I can be successful with any class of weapon on the same map, really its about swishing up your routes/spots to maximize weapon and loadout efficiency.
Also it depends on game mode. In tdm I just can't seem to run smg in village (my one fail), but kc or dom smg can be beast.
If I want the top score tho, I always go smg with tactical insertion in the middle of the map lol.its not the greatest sometimes for your kdr tho but always at least positive!
And for my fellow smg fanatics... an underused method of reducing range for ar users is SMOKE. If there's a head glitcher or camper who has u beat on range... toss some smoke, but be sure it doesn't go behind him... and not too close to you either. You want it to land about 3/4 toward him in between you guys.
This will eliminate his range and put him in YOUR range when you come through. Or you can flank him while he stares at it lol.
Yup smoke is a great tip to use for smg users, when you find yourself in those situations where the gap is to large.
Yeah silenced and range works great, but you hit the nail on the head regarding switching up routes/spots to maximize loadout efficiency. ![]()

Depends on the map I use SMGs for close range maps and I use assault rifles for open area maps
Yeah map layout plays a big part, some of the medium to larger maps though can still be ran with a smg/shotgun with precise route running though not easy.
I think ARs have are king now, and will always be king. You can't beat the versatility of an AR. They do well enough to keep up with SMGs at close range, dominate mid range, and do well at long range. Really just cant beat their versatility.
I think play style factors into it a bit as well, using a smg gives you the advantage of more mobility however the AR's versatility is hard to pass on.
I use both AR and SMG. AR and light machine guns with larger mas like Interchange and SMGs for close encounter maps like Dome. Of course that in certain areas of all maps some might have more advanatge than others but this overall rule has worked ok for me.
Interesting, do you run Overkill on any of your classes? I hardly see anybody running that.
The thing I like about this game is the balance between the gun classes. SMg's wreck close range, the PP90/P90/MP7 and even the UMP which is a bad gun overall will destroy any AR up close if you hit your shots. And from a long range the Assault rifles will destroy the SMG's if you hit your shots. Unlike in MW2 where the UMP was a more effective long range weapon than the ACR, or in BO where the FAMAS would totally destroy any SMG at any range. It all depends on the map this game. On maps like Mission, Dome, Seatown I like to use either an SMG or the Striker, on maps like Interchange and Lockdown I'll use the ACR, the G36c or the M4a1.

SMG with range destroys everything. Assault rifles have limited areas where they will out gun SMG's just due to the horrible map designs and focus on close quarter battles. Don't get me wrong i love my G-36 but there is only one or two maps where I feel I have the advantage using an assault rifle. If there wasn't a range proficiency assault rifles would be a better pick for a lot of maps. Since they have range, assault rifles just can't beat the mobility and rate of fire of an SMG.
Nothing wrong with loving the G36C, it's a great gun. Underrated IMO. However SMG with range on almost every map is sufficient enough to do well, even against AR users. Just need to watch which parts of the map you enter, route running etc.
As cheesy as it is I usually use 2 attachments silencer/thermal scope on the MK14. It's fantastic at holding objectives on DOM.
For KC, TD, and Free for all I use the PP90m1 with range and rapid fire. This is fantastic when paired with specialist and scavanger as your first specialist perk. That way after you get a couple of kills you can start refilling your ammo which is getting low by then. I usually main spec Blind Eye/Quickdraw/Stalker for that build.
Haven't tried the MK14 with thermal yet might have to give that a try, so far I've only used thermal on a few of the LMG's. The PP90m1 is an amazing weapon and the specialist loadout you described sounds like the right setup if you run rapid fire.
