Use an ELO rating.
The formula is a little complicated but the good thing is that no historical data needs to be recorded, simply the rating of both players at the time of a kill and the new rating after a kill. The old rating can simply be discarded.
Way it works:
Every player has a rating at all times. When you kill a player, your rating either goes up or stays the same. When you die, your rating goes down or stays the same.
However, the EXTENT of the rating move depends entirely on the quality of the player you killed or got killed by. So if a really good player is beating up a load of new players, his rating will hardly move as the ratings will already suggest theres a huge gap in skill.
By all means have all the current stats update as they do now but this TDM rating can be also listed. When entering game, simply have "random" or "similar." The former being completely random ratings, the others being games purely full of players with a rating within 200 pts of each other.
The great thing is, if a really good player wants to improve his rating he has to play in the "similar" goup as any kill of a player that is roughly 400 pts or more below him will have hardly no affect on his rating. In fact, any rouge bad game in this context will actually HARM his rating somewhat. The other good thing with it is that its designed to capture anyone who is considerably under rated or over rated at any moment.
So for example, if a really good player creates a brand new account and goes into a "similar" lobby, with just 2 or 3 games of going something like 40-1 will quickly lift him out of the opponents rating zone. Also, any "freak" occurances are ironed out too. So if you have a really bad lag game and get beaten up and its genuinely not your fault, your rating can be quickly "repaired" in future games.
Theres also a historical "arc" to the rating meaning that the more recent a kill is, the more influence it has on your rating. This could mean your combat record and leaderboards can show your "personal best" current rating, average rating etc.
A key aspect here is that no one is obligated to play against similar players BUT all games count towards their rating.
If implemented, we would have cases of players both having 2.5 KDRs but vastly different ratings. It would unveil a lot of phonies out there.- Report Abuse

That is how many backgammon leagues work.
If you play and equal player you get an average point increase, if he is a lot higher ranked you gain about 2 or 3 times the number of points. Equally if he is a lot lower you gain very little in the way of points.
If you lose against a poor player, you get hammered for a loss of points!- Report Abuse

Exactly.
I actually found out about it due my work in the gambling industry but it is used in various places (heres a link for the current ELO ratings of International football/soccer teams for example: http://www.eloratings.net/ [the list is about half way down the page]) and I think it could also work in call of duty.
ELO does have some problems but in a CoD context, they dont actually apply.
I know something like this is completely alien to the vast CoD community as the majority of them are "trained" to view things in the "99-1 on domination clip on you tube" way of thinking instead of actual competition.... but one can dream!
Although not brilliant, Im an above average player. The games I love the most are the ones where all of my opponents and team mates are of a similar ability. Great games to play.- Report Abuse

It is a complicated system but a very good one IMO.
You are perfectly correct. When you get an even playing field the games are far far more interesting. These guys with 40 kills a game must get totally bored. Even more bored than me trying to get one kill

Currently Being ModeratedRe: It doesn't make sense?Have you tried barebones pure, I'm an oldie too (for an online gamer) and I tend to do better on that mode. Playing field is levelled with no killstreaks/attachments or equipment, just your gun, 2x tac nades and 1 nade. Lot less to focus on, just you versus the enemy.

I hear ya. I have narrowed down my issues to just not being quick enough. Especially on the move. If I run into an enemy he will stab me before, shoot me before I can get a shot off.
I'm just beginning to wonder if it may be lag causing some of it?- Report Abuse

JPE777 and allystrachan are onto something here. In a perfect world, these gaming companies would hire statisticians (or at least people with half a brain) to handle multiplayer matchmaking. There should be two options to play, a "casual" setting, where anyone and everyone plays, and a "competitive" setting, that automatically matches you with people close to your skill level using algorithms and equations similar to those previously mentioned.
Still, I love a complete blowout as much as the next guy, but it'd be nice to have a built-in setting where I could play against other top-notch players from time to time. The "Competitive Playlist" is still filled with noobs half the time running Ghost or Flak Jacket and have no idea about objective play, and I don't have enough time to setup GB matches or participate in the MLG scene.
Barebones is a decent alternative, but it still doesn't quite scratch that itch for me.
However, with all the problems that people see in this game already (personally I think it's fine), I doubt something like this would be implemented in the near future. One can dream though!- Report Abuse

I've stopped sprinting so much when on the move, it's helped me a lot. Lag is a major issue, if when I check I'm bouncing on a yellow 2bar to a green 3bar I'll just quit. if any of the numbers on the loading bar go above 4 I'll tread carefully and see what the killcams show before quitting. I'm using virgin fibre optic at the mo and the network is in a mess, all to do with high traffic i.e. peak times, they apparently have a fix set for the 28th July, I've been lagging badly since January so I'll believe a fix is done when I finally get to win in knife fights on BOps.- Report Abuse

I am Virgin as well, but most of the time I'm sat around 8 - 9 meg connection so I just can't see it being lag. But who knows.
