In order to install/play you will need an internet connection. I would believe upon initial install you would need to complete the updates to play even single player. Every once in awhile there is also an update/Steam version check which will disable you from playing online if you HAVE NOT synced your Steam cache, meaning you have to have an internet connection and at least login ONCE every so often - into single player WHILE you are online to update your activation and allow to play while you are in Steam in offline mode... I'm unsure of the frequency but if say you don't login or play for a month and try and Steam reports a message that 'authentication failed' or 'no game data' - I forget what it says exactly... but still every once in awhile Steam needs to sync to enable offline play with no internet connection ** only once if you will only have internet connection once just to setup the computer - as long as the computer NEVER connects to the internet again after you install mw3 and update steam then login to single player campaign at least once, then it will not know that it needs to resync and Steam/MW3 needs to update ** if you are ALWAYS connected, yet prefer to be offline just playing single player, it will read Steam's/MW3s normal update logs and demand you be connected to resync and is required to play even in offline mode... recommendation: when you are online and plan an extended offline break, say you can't afford internet this month and decide to drop service for example, last thing you do before your service contract ends, open Steam and update all games in your library and the games you want to have access to offline for single player like MW3 single player campaign NEED to be logged into at least once so Steam will verify your data, then you can be offline as long as you want AS LONG AS Steam does not load and catch access to the internet even for a couple minutes... otherwise it may read and resync the latest updates and reset disabling you from playing MW3 offline until you login and Steam verifies that you have access to the single player campaign in offline mode... also it is 100% impossible to just install off the disc and play without having an internet connection in case anyone is wondering, since Steam authentication is required.

Some hackers control lobbies and matches, and sometimes they have the ability to pass abnormal abilities onto other players... in your case, one had given you certain advantages... and in this case you picked up a 'God Mode' hack from one of them... in the same fashion, they can add extra XP to give you an abnormally large experience point bonus per kill, they can give infinite ammo so that you don't run out as usual or have to reload as often if at all, they can make you run faster, they can make your character invisible, they can make you hold more than 2+ tactical grenades or multiple frags/semtex, even more than one throwing knife... some will give you two guns (not normally 'akimbo-able') such as dual MSR sniper and the like... trust me I have seen it all and I have been on servers with ridiculous crap such as this myself... and probably why BurtonJ of Valve once told me on my old account that I was operating a hacked Chaos lobby (page 2 of this post):

Though you did not run any 'illegal' software (or maybe someone else downloaded it while you weren't paying attention? *it is a possibility*)... anyhow YES, some types of hacks CAN be passed on though you are not running the actual aimbot or wallhack software, making it seem like you ARE THE PROBLEM, when you are truly NOT THE PROBLEM. Sadly, nothing you can do about it, except either attempt to locate the true hacker(s) and report them... however in cases like this, most often I myself find myself leaving the match/lobby prematurely before the match is over since this is NOT how I intend to play and do not want to participate in someone else's dream world. Sometimes, I'd love to stick around and identify the problem, yet I was banned on my old account with 1100 hours and at the time down to rank #367 in CTF leaderboard... and no way in hell am I going to suffer losing my stats again to BS after I worked hard to put up 2300+ flag captures, 3500 returns/defends, and 37,500 kills... still attest I never downloaded that crap and probably had the same 'passed on' abilities which I have seen on the new account multiple times since then... and if it can be identified, maybe it would clear my name once and for all, because hackers have done the same to me on more than one occasion... I don't even care that I spent an additional $40 for a new copy of the game, nor do I care that I bought the DLC all over again... but this same crap is what I believe caused my ban and stats reset (as it most likely earned my multiplayer ban 'cheating infraction')... I pray that doesn't happen to you, because there have to be 100s of players that can attest this is 100% positively truthful that they have also had abnormal abilities passed on by the lobby host or hacker in their match, giving an unwanted advantage in your gameplay.

Sadly FFA and TDM are the most targetted by actual hackers of any game mode, since they don't have to concentrate on objectives and just kill kill kill... I'll admit there are better players but most often hacks are identifiable if you know what to look for... you will learn who is and isn't hacking in games after awhile... you'll just know when the script kiddies are in bed and you perform better for like an hour then you'll know when they wake up and start all over again...

Notice for the rest of you I clearly highlighted the ONE WEEK AGO... so in that stickied thread they set expectations for 'at least' one to two weeks ahead of time. In the last two to three weeks we have seen at least 3+ new types of hacks, especially another that I posted on about 'How to make my clan tag?'... those aren't mods who the hell are you kidding? 99% of people with a *yellow* (or other color) nametag in chat - to the right of your title and above the mini rank emblem as seen in game lobby - are hackers, go ahead play against them... there are very few that have disabled the aimbot or wallhacks and just use the nametag mod... you'll see the truth on that too... anyhow new information, new workload, longer delay, nuff said... give that **** some time because it ISN'T ANYWHERE NEAR THE FUXXING DEADLINE EXPECTATIONS THAT WERE SET, END OF STORY.

If anyone on this forum 'could easily code game features, add 64 player maps, include map mod tools, blah blah blah' they'd have made their own game competing against CoD franchise right now... instead they are here complaining about how nothing is done... nothing happens overnight, so once again, give Candice/MW3 security some credit for working their a$$es off for months attempting to fix new emerging threats in the blink of an eye... this game didn't just take a week to code... BLOPS2 was announced right after launch of MW3 with expected release date preset ONE YEAR LATER... MW4 is slated for release end of 2013... they are working for months if not years on upgrading and implementing new features, graphics updates, etc. in order to make things work... so if you thought this change was going to happen overnight... well guess what... go play Sims 3 and hack if you want to, we don't care...

Try verifying your Steam cache for MW3, maybe for both, though I am not quite sure, since I would believe it doesn't matter if you verify single player or multiplayer (as it technically is ONE game with both features)

To do this:

Exit MW3, then goto Steam window.

Goto library, then right click MW3 multiplayer/single, and go to 'Properties'

Go to the 'Local Files' tab at top of that window.

Click 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache'

It will then check and verify all game files and download anything you are missing. IF this does not fix your problem, there are one of two other solutions I could think of. You would either need A) to contact Steam support or Activision/IW (try Steam first as the game install requires Steam) OR B) You have a more complex Windows (or other OS) issue that something is screwed up, maybe even hardware incompatibility causing the error. As I said, if verifying the game cache does not work, contact Steam first and see if they have news on that specific error code... you can alternatively check and see if Google search results show anyone with a positive confirmed solution for that error as well, though I don't recommend you to try anything UNOFFICIAL that someone random posted, instead of Steam or other representatives asking you to perform the correct fix.

Apparently, they've taken some of my posts down here with obvious blatant hacker names and profile links, but I'm going to post obvious videos there instead... I don't really give two shxts about violating the ToS but they keep taking my posts down here, and as of two nights ago... which I agree, as I said, clearly violated the ToS on the 'name and flame' rules, but this kind of crap needs to be brought to attention, as *MOST* of the clan tag mods are packaged with aimbot and wallhacks, whether or not users take advantage of that function, even for 10 minutes or 10 rounds... so Valve/IW/Activision cannot control what goes up on Facebook, especially video evidence, as the videos are copyright and owned by me, it would be a violation of local and federal law for them to limit me there, end of story.

Now I understand these *mods* are a new-er thing, for the most part I have seen them emerge in the last 2-3 weeks more and more, and they have NOT been around since launch like other types of hacks. With the last free weekend they have been introduced and advertised by users to *download/buy* them. I understand there are new patches coming to PC - which one thread flames Valve/Activision/IW for not releasing these patches on time... check the sticky for the PC patch update from Candice/Candyslexia of IW:

Anyhow, MW3 security is doing their job so to speak... ever have that last minute situation come up and don't have a clue how you're going to make things work? In the middle of working on these patches as of 1 week ago, new hack types have come into play, and my guess is its setting things back a bit... many have reported things and given information, and trust me they are working on things, but give it time, this isn't something they are going to fix overnight as half this forum would like to think. I don't care what level of programming knowledge these forums users have... if they were any good there would be a 'Call of Bob' (or whatever name) game that would not have hackers or have map mod tools... they wouldn't be here complaining if they knew how to code the entire game and/or fix the problem issues... just saying maybe some should respect Candice/MW3 security for working their a$$es off day and night trying to throw together last minute patches that address *new-er issues that just came about within the last week or two... I imagine they knew what they were originally going to fix, then found out last minute that something new came up as I said, and are now working on more than one specific project... just stfu and give it time...

Posted this in another thread, or at least 10... this one was specifically for a 'similar' issue, and also may help you all:

Looks like you have the same thing that happened to me possibly... first, go in Steam, goto Community, click your name to view your profile - middle of page far right in the 'Recently Played' stats box, are there 'ban(s) on record'? If so you were caught cheating and this is a good cause that error comes up alot seeing as we have a ton of n00bs around lately... you can click the 'ban(s) on record' and it would tell you which game(s) you were banned from with a 'cheating infraction' and if it does and says MW3 then shame on you, go diaf or play out in traffic.

If not, you may have been stuck with the beta update failure like myself... IF you signed up for the latest Steam beta version IT IS INCOMPATIBLE with Win 7 and some games, i.e. MW3 and Civ5 that I know for certain... to relieve this issue:

Exit Steam completely, close the TSR running in background, then:

Delete everything in Steam folder EXCEPT the Steam.exe application

**INCLUDING every file and folder EXCEPT the 'Steamapps' folder where your games are stored

Then once that's done, clcik the Steam app and it will default to the latest NON Beta version without the failure update stopping many from playing MW3 or other games... IF that doesn't work, contact Steam support for further help on that issue.

Well sounds like your primary hard drive, or the one that Steam/MW3 are installed on (if custom install) is near full... delete some of your pr0n and it should resolve the issue... stop torrenting so much crap... but whatever it takes, it sounds like you need to delete some stuff and make room for the game to run properly... if this is not the case that your hard drive is near full, then I would contact Steam and/or Activision and find what is causing this.

Default location for Steam/MW3 in Win 7 is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\call of duty modern warfare 3

(note that you may only have a 'Program Files' folder instead, due to the fact that you may be operating with a 32bit OS installation, and mine is seperate in the 'x86' version because I am running a 64bit version of Win 7 Ultimate, still also having a 'Program Files' folder, which in my case is for 64bit installations and the 'x86' folder refers to 32bit program information)

To check available hard drive space on your primary (and also secondary, in the case the game is installed in a custom location) in Windows:

Click the Start button in Win XP (Windows symbol for Vista/7 in bottom lower left corner, then in the right side menu windowpane, click 'Computer', and your default drive for the majority is almost always C: drive... right click the drive and select 'Properties' to view a pie chart showing filled/free space (also Vista? and 7 for positive shows a bar graph and drive stats bar that shows data as in '476gb free of 640gb' for example... if the first number is very low (in the case that status bar is showing red in color in Vista/7) for example stats showing '2gb free of 640gb' then you only have 2gb of space left to work with and need to figure out what you should delete in order to make room... keep in mind Windows by default also sets a hidden partition of your hard drive as virtual memory to take some pressure off the hardware RAM memory chips and speed things up on its own, so having 2gb free is like saying you have 1gb free truthfully (or whatever this cache is set to, if not default, since it can be user defined allocation of space) for example...

Sadly they aren't the only clan doing that... members of AD, clan leader K9Style.ad is one of them... even using aimbot and wallhacks because they are nubs... if they are truly not kick/banning players then their entire team is ragequitting and somehow its causing the server to crash, kicking everyone... can't positively tell, but we have rejoined the same match going, so I'm guessing its a 50/50 on the kick/ban or server crash... most often just a kick to force an extra loss on your stats and reset your match accomplishments.

To be honest, I was posting in a thread titled 'Anyone else tired of hackers ruining this game?' or something like that... and as of yesterday that thread was taken down, and also my posts in the thread titled 'Any news about the anticheat patch?' were removed like I never posted (also yesterday)... Yep I was posting hacker names and profile links, even videos to the CoD Hacker's Wall of Shame... and my fraps'd videos are still going up fuxx that ****, if its a violation of the ToS here, then I can still freely post solid evidence of these n00bs on Facebook for the world to see...

Frankly I'm with you, I don't give two shxts if its a violation of the ToS or I get banned off the forum, all the hacks mentioned are dead ass obvious wallhacks or aimbotters, definitely shooting people from across the map through walls, throwing hundreds of grenades (nope definitely not 'Scavenger Pro' pickups), using some type of God Mode hacks, obviously following people with no radar, UAV, no Recon Pro or Sitrep Pro, etc. to give clues to position, prefiring around corners before you even arrive or turn to attempt to kill them... We all know how to identify hacks, its not hard... I admit there are tons of better players than me, shxt I have a crappy .72-.76 KD ratio (mostly due to playing CTF playlist and sacrificing myself to attempt to grab flags n run or defend my flag from walking off) I could list near 100 names of players that frequent the CTF playlist that are way way better than me according to KD ratio and skills that are 100% legit... anyhow don't bother naming them here, they'll just delete your posts and probably not investigate whether or not you were telling the truth... maybe they actually are validating what I posted was truth or a bunch of BS? who knows? Trust me I could write a life story for the average player in one day, sometimes running all day/nighters, even as much as near 18 hours with a couple ninja afk bathroom breaks and a microwave meal that gets ignored for at least 5-10 minutes because Dome or Hardhat just popped into the lobby selection LOL

And once again, had to edit this post for a side note... if IW/Valve/Activision informed me that I posted a false positive of a suspected hacker, I guarantee I would give a public apology for accusations, even go as far as having them call in a food order to their favorite restaurant and picking up the tab on my credit card, but I can guarantee 95% are no doubt caught red handed guilty of cheating to enhance their performance in games.

Try going into Steam Library, right click MW3 Multiplayer and go to Properties > 'Local Files' tab > click the button 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache'... it will verify all files and re-download what you are missing... there is a possibility something is corrupt as this sounds like a 'file missing/invalid' type error... this may also be a language support error, which I'll admit I know nothing about if you are using a different game version with Italian language support (or Russian, Chinese, French, etc. etc.) You may need to contact Steam/Activision support on this one but as I said, at least attempt to verify the files, it may be that simple...

Yea what Hooty said too... last week I just upgraded my router from a pre-Linksys EA1200 (almost 5+ years old... time to go anyhow) to Cisco's Linksys EA4500... you may not need their $200 monster though... however in my situation it was a connection related issue with the router randomly dropping devices due to overload... and the simple fact that Cisco has them on their site for $110 refurbished (like new/rebuilt)... and it corrected my ping issue as well back down to ~20 or less... this is probably not your problem if it is the ONLY computer/device on the network... the crappy router/gateway your ISP gives you should be fine, but again as in my situation, I have 3 phones, 2 laptops, and 3 desktops all feeding off the router @ 54mbps max wireless x 5 and @ 100mb wired x 2 do the math above the basic 300mbps just retrieving automatic Windows/Android updates while I could be busy killing... soooo I upgraded to efficiently handle the devices without stalling my body count any,.. again though, you didn't specify whether it was a wireless/wired keyboard, yet still check for drivers for it and search Google to see if other users have reported issues/corrections that can be made for your specific model... there may be an update you need for Win XP/Vista/7/Mac OS X/Linux/Unix/BSD compatibility in order to utilize your keyboard without error... and again IF wireless, it may be receiving feedback from other devices, even getting kicked off the bluetooth adapter, EVEN IF it is only for MW3 yet you can use Yahoo Messenger just fine, etc. it may have just stopped response to the iw5mp.exe because Windows thinks there is an error with the driver/commands being sent... some crap like that... you are best off with a wired keyboard/mouse in any case, ofc a mechanical keyboard would be nice, even backlit so you don't have to fidget in the dark and give yourself a few extra hours killing time... some links for product info: http://www.leopold.co.kr/ - http://www.topre.co.jp/e/products/comp/realforce_index.html - sadly two of the best mechanical keyboard manufacturers top of the line PC equipment and you won't get anything out of it if you can't understand Japanese/Korean... Wireless keyboard? Wireless mouse? Computer wirelessly connected to router? Cell phone within close range of the PC? It is very possible that the keyboard or other device(s) causing interference or lag... but a total freeze where you can't do anything after pressing CTRL and going prone? Do you have CTRL as a hotkey for anything or still have 'Sticky Keys' on in Windows? Try disabling sticky keys... in Win 7 its located in Control Panel - Ease of Access - should be in keyboard options somewhere (normally you press the CTRL/SHIFT keys etc. 5 times and Windows alerts with a notification window that says 'Hey somethings wrong with the keyboard!', which may interfere with MW3 possibly)

In the other case... I had the Logitech MX5000 keyboard and mouse combo - DO NOT BUY IT SERIOUSLY - worst lag due to incompatibility in Win 7 once I upgraded with not just one but both devices... and if you have one of these... I'm sorry for you, but most of the owners have ditched these, as Logitech states is outdated and they will NOT be providing Win 7/8 compatible drivers, its out of support for the most part.

Don't exactly know what to tell you here... but you say everything works fine elsewhere, as you can open Microsoft Word and type, etc. just keyboard freezes ingame... if wireless, how often do you charge/change the batteries? Just saying I use rechargable and they go on the charger once a day... well its on auto for a 15min quickcharger, but I take the fresh ones out and replace the used ones back in the charger, swapping new daily... Not that you really have to do this more than once a week, even once a month if they last super long...but I have like 2 brain cells left and I don't have time for BS... when its time to kill shxt that mouse better work... hate lagging when the charge is low or having to drop group midmatch to charge the batteries when they're dead, therefore, reduce the risk to 0 by charging them daily...

Possibly look up and see if you have the correct drivers installed... of course its relatively hard since Microsoft/Windows uses a generic default keyboard driver for most... but if your keyboard's manufacturer has a proprietary driver set and install package, download and install it instead of Windows default maybe... its possible it could be conflicting, usually does because the generic driver set may not support keyboards with LCD or extra function keys (ones that may be macro'd with proprietary software to turn volume up/down, play music or dvd, etc.)

The best solution here BEFORE buying anything or trying anything else would be to ensure the batteries are stable IF it is a wireless keyboard... IF using Windows OS, turn Sticky Keys off... check the keyboard manufacturer's site for proprietary drivers and install them if they exist... if none of the above works - GOOGLE BOTH 1) your keyboard mfr and model # - like 'logitech mx5000 error' and see if the results come back with a ton of negative feedback or anyone else has reported those problems... and 2) your keyboard dongle/bluetooth adapter if wireless... its possible they have interference issues with other devices, yea some say they can handle up to #xxxx devices, but that's a load of crap if you ask me... also is it possible someone else is on your network? ie, husband/wife, kids, roommates downloading while you're playing? could be that random spurt while they are loading a Youtube video in HD? for example... to be rightfully honest I have not noticed an issue with keyboard malfunction in my entire life... except for a few keyboards missing keys, etc. and the OH SHXT! just spilled my coffee situations... but as I said there may be many possibilities of what to look for... and to be honest, before you go spending money to diagnose your keyboard or find a solution to make IT work... you'd probably be better off just buying a newer Win 7/8/Mac OS X compatible keyboard

sounds like PC and ISP perform faster than your router to be honest... what kind of router are you using? same issue here... i have 3 phones, 2 laptops, and 2 desktops via ethernet on the router and it was overloaded... just not enough to handle the transfer... are you downloading/torrenting in the background? are you allowing too many programs to auto-update midgame? many many causes for this... router is one of them... just upgraded to llinksys ea4500 (refurbished deal off cisco site for $110 US vs. new for $199)... using any download/ping speed management software? cfosspeed is good, support included with some ASUS RoG motherboards for free... or order for like $20 US from http://www.cfos.de - needs to be installed on every PC on the network for traffic shaping to kick in... but communicates better if it transfers the data between the network, basically allowing more prioritty to games, etc. than someone just BS'ing around on Facebook... allows better prioritization and simultaneous download/activity between multiple PCs... but maybe just transfer speed of your router/network card... are you wireless off your router? you do know there is a transfer cap via wireless vs. straight ethernet cable to router? could also be your PC bottlenecking your speed not able to circulate data fast enough between all of the above... hard to tell but you could check into your router or try third party tools to increase download speeds/lower ping such as cfosspeed

In Steam, go to Community tab, click your name to view your profile... halfway down on the right side check your 'recently played game stats' window and see if there are 'ban(s) on record'... possibly you have been caught using hacks? If it does click the ban(s) on record and verify it is a MW3 ban... if not you may be using Steam's latest beta update which has an incompatibility in Win 7 and MW3... to relieve that, exit Steam completely, then in your Steam folder, delete everything but 'Steam.exe' application AND delete everything folders and all EXCEPT the 'steamapps' folder where your games are stored... now run the 'Steam.exe' and it will default to the latest stable non-beta update, then relogin to your account, and you should be able to play... assuming there is nothing else wrong with Steam servers in your area or there isn't a more complicated issue with your network/ISP, etc. causing the errors.

Try exiting the game, even exit and restart Steam maybe... right-click either or single/multiplayer in Steam and go to 'Properties' > 'Local Files' tab > 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache'... it should verify all files and update what you don't have... other than that you'll have to contact Steam support and verify your purchase confirmation, etc. with them if that doesn't work to relieve the problem...
