You do know that lag compensation is built into almost every single online game right? If it wasn't, games would be totally unplayable. Even dedicated servers have lag compensation.

Oh and matchmaking is done by XBL, all Treyarc can do is ask XBL nicely to try and do it a certain way if they possibly can.
I'm on about their ballsed-up equivalent of lag compensation here, yes. As you say, it's in all games, but never before has anybody made as much of a mess of it as this mob seem to have managed.

Whats up with the auto assist killing someone when the shooter isnt shooting close to them?

I have noticed a lot of connection issues for the last 3 weeks. Most of the lobbies are now a mish mash of different connections. I don't want to blame this on 3A as I think this is more a XBL matchmaking problem. I live in the Northeast US where I should be in all 4 bar lobbies. For some unexplained reason this is not happening. Can't really complain though, we are using the internet after all.

As far as the host goes, sometimes it is good and sometimes it is a disadvantage. It all depends on the rest of the connections in the room.

TA's awful in built lag compensation I'm afraid! (thanks for that TA!).

Remember, in Black ops your connection is only ever as good as the person on the opposing side with the worst connection. If you have a better quality connection than the other team, the game will physically 'pull back' your gameplay. Nice idea, only it doesn't work. The reason it doesn't work is that the view you have in game is deliberately pulled back a bit, but (and here's why it's borked) your character model still appears before the opponent in real time and therefore your 'hitboxes' are actually further ahead of your view in the game. Good example here is when you get face to face with someone in melee distance, you know you knifed them first, yet still die. If you look at the killcam here, your character model will be further forward than your view led you to believe (usually has run past the opponent or is simply standing there in front of him looking like an idiot)! Check it out yourselves when next on if you want proof.

I have a cable fibre line and seperate dsl at home, from two different suppliers and it happens on both.

And yes, it's been a lot worse than usual for the last few weeks.

TA's solution for those with cheap internet who lag, is to stand the whole equation on it's head and deliberately lag back the majority.

Now that, is pure genius.

Exactly! You're not going to lag as host if your ISP and XBL are communicating effectively. I know the lag we're talking about as I've had it really badly on my Virgin connection since the game came out.

I've never had it on my Be connection or the Orange one that preceded it.
Their new traffic management system has caused MASSIVE problems all over XBL, naturally this affects all games played over live also.
I'm with these jokers and have all the problems described. I'll be leaving them as soon as, as despite all the complaints, it seems to now be a permanent implementation.

Get on the phone and complain!

I thought Virgin were fixing this issue a few weeks back ?

Although there have/are problems with Virgin BO is mainly the problem, My friend who I party with most times when I play is on Virgin and he has no issues with the game at all unless on the odd occasion he pulls host (he actually Quit a game 2 nights ago for the first time ever because of it) but generally he has no lag issues.

Nope, the problem's not sorted yet they appear quite happy with how it is now. So like I say, I'll be leaving.

I used to think it was all or partly BO too. That was until I had a second connection (Be Unlimited) installed and have absolutely no issues whatever playing on that one.

Virgin are mugging everyone off by advertising a premium gaming service and then restricting the bandwidth and data flow. They simply have too many subscribers on the current network and it can't cope. Instead of investing in their network, they've simply squeezed everyone on to an already oversubscribed system. It's pathetic and I fancy they'll find themselves in a whole pile of it soon enough. People will start leaving in droves and/or OFCOM will get involved.

And I'm beginning to get annoyed with it tbh. Being hardwired doesn't seem to make a difference. I don't understand why virgin are so bad when they offer the best connections though. I'm a bit of a thicko when it comes to this sort of stuff. I do speedtest and ping test regularly and my connection is always the same, almost what I pay for. Plus as I understood virgin are one of the only ones who can stream up and down effectively?!?

It's never been this bad before though. I never really noticed the lag like this.

Its Virgin Medias new traffic management/shaping. I've got the 50meg package and it's been an absolute nightmare for the last couple of weeks.

The problem has affected quite a few on line games, not just black ops. The good news is that the issue has been highlighted and the support forum manager is asking for feedback so they can get it sorted.

I'd advise anyone having these problems to go to the link below ASAP and let the guy know what's happening. The more info they have, hopefully the sooner it'll get sorted.

Does that qualify as one word?

Anyway, here we are nearly four months in and -

- My lobbys STILL don't repolulate when people leave.
- I STILL end up in a German (or anywhere else that certainly does not qualify as local) lobby when search set to locale only.
- Ninja pro STILL does not do what it says it does.
- I am STILL trying to shoot people from the future (they should have the Delorean from Back to the Future as a perk for us affected I reckon)
- I am at the wrong end of the lag compo in EVERY SINGLE GAME (see above)
- My bullets are STILL ignored when dead on target only to see the killcam and I've been hit by a round or two from someone spraying hopelessly from across the map.
- I STILL have skippy laggy awful frame rate issues when hosting.
- When on the bad end of the lag compo (98% of the time), the controls STILL feel sluggish and unresponsive.
- As for the knifing system, well that's STILL a joke.
- The netcode STILL is unable to deal with me shooting at multiple enemies at the same time due to the horrendous frame rate issues that ensue.
- Treyarch STILL refuse to even acknowledge the problem, insulting us further by arrogantly stating 'it's all in our heads'.

And before anyone says get a better internet connection, I have two - one is 50 down 5 up fibre, the other is 20 down and 5 up. Both have exceptionally low pings, one with a bit of jitter, the other with none whatsoever. I have exactly the same problems with both.

So what have TA done so far to address the problems?

- Nerfed the 74u.
- Brought out a map pack.

Effing brilliant Treyarch!

I've had enough of all this bs and have moved back to MW2, where hits actually register and the whole thing is playable on a basic level.

F you Treyarch - I will never buy another one of your sub standard piece of shite games as long as I live.
The really skippy lag you've described is probably down to packet loss. I've had loads of it and finally discovered it was all down to data loss on the line - run a pingtest (www.pingtest.net) and see where you're at. It's nothing to do with bandwidth speeds, it's all about your line quality (ping and packet loss).

That'll probably cover most of what you've been experiencing.

As for the AK74 - again partly attributable to the above, but yeah, it's deffo not as good as it used to be, only at range mind you.

I've been trying since the inception of this thread to post a comment, but have been unable to due to these jokers inability to even host a forum!

Right then....Yes, I'm having exactly the same problems as all others here are reporting. It's not the normal skippy type screen lag, it's the lag where the frame rate is fine (mostly), yet I'm obvioulsy a clear second or so behind the rest of the lobby. This is clearly evident on every killcam I watch. It's all been said here to death, but I feel if I don't add my two pennys worth, I've not done all I can to solve my problem.

I have a 50 meg down, 5 meg up fibre connection wired via a top end cable directly to my xbox, my NAT type has never been anything other than open. I am chosen as host 19 times out of 20 and the game is TOTALLY AND UTTERLY UNPLAYABLE for me. Even when not host, it's still very hit and miss - I may get one half decent game in 15/20. I'm not bad at these games and have never had these problems before with any other game on Live. MW2 and all others have always run fine without these problems. It is definitely not my connection as the splendidly ignorant Olin is rather piously suggesting.

Last nights game play gave me my most laughable lag experience to date. I posted this on another site earlier, so have a go on this one;

Playing last night, I could hear a guy running towards me (I use decent headphones with Ninja pro equipped), so crouched behind a feature. He was definitely coming my way, so I started pre firing but realised I was waaaay too early with this and had probably given the game away. A couple of seconds later, he promptly appears around the corner through my hail of bullets and kills me. Guess what? On the killcam, apparently I didn't start shooting until he was around the feature and past my line of fire! No joke, it was at least two seconds, probably three behind what I could see on screen.

Now just to underline, not only was I pre firing, but I was pre firing prematurely (stop sniggering at the back). To see the killcam run back and me only start shooting AFTER the guy had come around the corner is just simply beyond a joke. I stress again, it was the best part of THREE SECONDS difference.

I'd like TA to try and explain that one.

The worst bit about it is that I love this game (on the very brief glimpses it has given me when working properly) and really want it to work as it would easily be the best COD MP yet, so I've no problem with the game itself, just the networking.

Anyway, this game is unplayable for me and I feel cheated and mugged off by TA.

The best way to get this sorted is to start getting on to Activision. Believe me, they'll be passing bricks if enough people vow to never buy another one of their games again on the basis that they have let a sub par developer ruin the most successful franchise of all time.

The way TA have handled (or not in this case) this issue is an absolute effing disgrace. No other industry on the planet would get away with this kind of behaviour. Rushing an uncompleted game to market is bad enough, but the lack of acknowledgement and action on THE game breaking issue is absolutely disgusting.

SORT IT OUT TREYARCH - is my current motto on live and I suggest you all change your profiles to the same. No business likes bad press.

Apols for the long ranting post, but the rage has been building for weeks....

Im sure you just got locked into host and thats why it seemed so great......just wait..lol the lag will come.
Being host screws you over big time because of the lag compensation. And I should know! Because of my connection, 19/20 times I'm chosen as host and I'm running at least one full second behind everyone else in the lobby. It's an effing nightmare, you just can't hit a thing. It seems also that when you're host your own hit boxes become twice the size and you're dropped by some sprayer from halfway across the map by two shots that haven't even hit you!

Nope, I was defo not host during this two hour period of play. When I was chosen as such, I backed out and started again.

Host is the worst thing that can happen to you in Bops (for us here in the uk anyway). I know where you're coming from as all previous CODs having host was God like awesomeness.
It's all over every Bops and gaming site. It's all my friends are talking about. There's no way on Gods green earth they don't know about this. Sadly, the fact that it's not been acknowledged means there's either nothing they can do about it. Or they simply can't be bothered.
Another example is tonight, I ran into a room and fired at least 15 shots at a guy who I knew was camping there. I got off 10 rounds before he even started firing. However, on the killcam, I never even fired. It showed me run into the room and die in a hail of gunfire.

Yesterday my friend and I were on opposing teams due to him joining the game late. At one point killed him after firing half a magazine into him (I use the Galil, by the way...not a weak gun). He asked how I was able to drop him with one shot as it had shown as a headshot in the bottom left scroll. I told him how many shots I had taken; he said on his screen, I fired once.
My ping is showing as 4 bright green bars. My NAT is open. My internet connection is excellent and exceptionally fast. Can someone PLEASE tell me what's causing this, or let me know if they're having similar experiences?

Yup, its goofed, but I don't think it's the connection;

I'm having the same problems, but thought it was just me being a bit slow yesterday, so to check I popped MW2 in, played 3 games of FFA with a silenced ACR without stopping power equipped. Won two games (30-4, 30-11) and came second in the other (25-7). Put BOPS back in and played one game of FFA, ended 1-16!!!!

I lost EVERY one on one and for about a dozen of those deaths, I was dead the split second I could even see a part of the opposing player on screen and wasn't able to even ADS before getting killed at long ranges...
