I have resorted to cutting and pasting in effort to make sure that nothing is lost in translation. It really does make sense when you combine it with some of his overviews of latency stuff:

For lag compensation, generally what you do is have the server rewind the state of the world so that when it does bullet collision, the world looks like it did on your screen when you pulled the trigger. So while a player may now be behind a wall, if he was out in the open when you shot him, it'll do damage to him. This can be frustrating, but keep in mind that if you "missed" players right before they ran behind walls, that would also be frustrating, too. Nobody has come up with a perfect solution to this.

If you can have players play on servers with a low ping, then the distance someone will have moved is much smaller, so you'll get less visible cases. So at 200ms, you could die long after you ran behind a wall. But at 50ms, you might not even be fully past the edge of the wall yet, so your perceived injustice is really small.

In the end I still think you were right all those years ago Macc when you hypothosized a dysncing within the game. It's not overly common, but in my primative mind it helps explain WTF moments and allows me to move along without a ton of frustration.

When I look at it, I think I see something else. The way many MP games do networking (including CODs) is the server sends snapshots at some interval - some games do 5 times a second, some do 10, some do 15, some do 20. So if you do 60/snapshot rate, you get the number of frames between snapshots. So if the game is doing 10 snapshots a second, you get 1 every 6 client frames.

So if you are rendering at 60fps, this means you have one frame that is authoritative of what the server had, and then you have a few frames where you are filling in the data on the client. Usually you use two snapshots and interpolate between them, just in time for a new snapshot to arrive. So if you are getting 10 snapshots a second, you do 1 snapshot that is "real", and then 5 that are interpolated, and then back to 1 that is "real" again, over and over. If it's 20 snapshots a second, you are only interpolating 2 frames between snapshots.

So the client is already interpolating the positions of things - if you didn't everything would be jerky.

If you rewind on the server and don't also interpolate, then you are going to be showing the player one thing while judging their reactions on a different set of rules. That's never fun.

A lot of what we are seeing in these various videos seem to fall victim to circumstances such as this, as opposed to anything else.
